He Changed My Major And I Changed My Entire Life Chapter 05

Sean froze mid-step. The faint smile faded from his face, and the wooden specimen box nearly slipped out of his hands.

“…What did you just say?”

The neighbor, Mrs. Hale, looked surprised. “You mean you had no idea? Weren’t you two best friends?”

“I heard Joanie didn’t get into the major she wanted. Her family owns international overseas assets, so they enrolled in overseas undergraduate programs for her.”

“Didn’t you two talk about this?”

Sean’s eyes widened. That couldn’t be right. They’d promised each other they’d go to Harvard together. Joanie never broke her promises.

He tried to tell himself that, but his mind was spinning anyway. On his way down the front steps, he tripped. All the specimen boxes crashed to the ground. Wooden frames splintered. Butterfly wings cracked and mixed with dust.

The mess reminded him of that night at the bar. His chest ached. The unease inside him grew worse. Mrs. Hale cried out and helped him up, asking if he was hurt.

Sean just shook his head, dazed. “Thanks, ma’am.”

Mrs. Hale sighed, patted his shoulder, and went home without saying anything else.

When he got back to the Blair house, his mother had already finished packing. She frowned when she saw how miserable he looked.

“What’s wrong? You had three months off and you’re still upset about starting school?”

“Where’s Jo? Why is she taking even longer than you? Did you make her mad again?”

“I’ve told you a hundred times, she’s like family. Be nice to her and go bring her over. I haven’t seen her in over a month—not since you skipped our celebration dinner.”

Sean’s voice was rough. “Mom, you’re so annoying.”

“Why do you always favor her over me?”

Mrs. Blair froze. She had no idea he felt that way. Before she could explain, Sean dropped his gaze and cut her off.

“She got mad and applied to schools overseas. She left. Didn’t tell me anything.”

“She blocked my number and all my social media accounts. I can’t get through to her.”

“Can I push back my Harvard enrollment start date a few days? I need to go find her.”

Mrs. Blair was shocked. “That’s impossible. You two promised to go to Harvard together.”

“Jo’s never one to make rash choices over nothing. What on earth blew up between you two to make her upend her whole college plan? Spit it out, Sean.”

Sean hung his head. He ran his fingers along the suitcase handle. After a long pause, he said quietly,

“I changed her major on her application. She hated it. She broke up with me. I thought she was just throwing a tantrum, so I didn’t take it seriously.”

“You changed her major? Do you have any idea how much she loves biology?” Mrs. Blair’s voice shot up. She glared at him.

“Elementary Education is a better fit for her,” Sean said, his voice trailing off. “And if that didn’t work out, I could just help her change majors once we got to Harvard.”

“Besides…I couldn’t stand the thought of us doing long-distance college.”

Mrs. Blair’s chest heaved, grinding her teeth in exasperation. “No wonder she dumped you.”

“You’ve got an overinflated sense of self-importance, Sean. You had no right to make that decision for her.”

She rubbed her temples, made a few phone calls, then turned back to him.

“I got your enrollment deferral sorted and your flight ticket locked in.”

“Go after her.”

“Whatever happens, you at least owe her an apology.”
