He Called My Sugar Allergy Jealousy—So I Made Him My Ex Chapter 08

The room went silent.

Mom’s hands started shaking. Dad got up from his chair.

I looked at Megan–at that smug, self–satisfied look on her face–and suddenly found it funny.

“What are you laughing at?” Megan frowned.

I didn’t answer. Instead, I asked, “You here because you want me to help you find him? Or you want

me to divorce him so you can take my place?”

Megan bit her lip and said nothing. But her eyes said everything.

“Either way, I’m divorcing him.”

A flicker of relief crossed my parents‘ faces.

Megan went from stunned to thrilled. She bit back a smile, trying hard not to look too pleased.

“You mean it?”

“I do.” I nodded and met her eyes.

“But there’s something I’m curious about.”

“How good is he in bed that you got knocked up on the first try?”

Megan’s face froze. Her eyes darted away as she frowned.

Lupposed

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

I picked up my bowl and took a sip.

“Nothing. I’m just curious.”

“How long have you two been together? A year? Two?”

Megan said nothing.

I went on. “You’ve been at it plenty of times and never got pregnant.”

“Now suddenly you are. I get pregnant, then you get pregnant. Quite a coincidence.”

Megan’s face fell. “What the hell are you talking about? This baby’s Derek’s!”

I smiled. “I never said it wasn’t. Just asking.”

“Maybe you should check the police station.”

Megan’s face darkened. She said nothing else and left.

After she was gone, Mom stared at the door, shaking with anger.

“The nerve of that little-! Coming here to your face like that!”

“Mom, don’t get upset.”

“How can I not be upset? That bastard Derek knocked up some other woman while you-”

“Mom.” I cut her off. “My baby’s gone. Whatever happens to them is none of my business.”

Dad walked over and guided Mom back into her chair.

“Let’s stay out of it. It’s Clara’s call.”

A few days after Megan left, the police came again

This time, they came with the investigation results.

They’d pulled security footage and taken statements from neighbors and the paramedics on

scene that day.

Derek was being charged with criminal abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

Patricia was charged as an accomplice. Both were formally indicted.

Derek confessed at the station. He admitted to swapping my meds for sugar and locking me in

the kennel.

But he kept insisting he hadn’t meant to hurt me. He said he hadn’t known I was pregnant.

“Ms. Whitmore, we’re here to ask if you’d be willing to sign a statement of forgiveness.”

“No.” I didn’t hesitate.

The female officer looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

She nodded and closed her notebook.

“The trial’s in two weeks. Please make sure you’re there.”

A week before the trial, Derek’s attorney showed up.

Briefcase in hand, he introduced himself as Derek’s attorney, hired to negotiate with me.

He placed a bank card on the nightstand.

“This is a gesture of goodwill from Mr. Hale. Five hundred thousand dollars. He hopes you’ll let this go for the sake of your marriage.”

I didn’t even look at it. I told Mom to hand it back.

“Take it. I don’t want it.”

The attorney froze, then pushed the card toward me again.

“Ms. Whitmore, Mr. Hale deeply regrets everything. He just made a foolish mistake.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

“A foolish mistake?”

“When he locked me in that kennel, he wasn’t confused.”

“When he swapped my meds for sugar, he knew exactly what he was doing.”

“If he was really so confused, how come he never got confused about Megan?”

really

The attorney’s face turned red. He had nothing to say.

Mom shoved him out, threw the card at him, and slammed the door.

“Tell that bastard to stay the hell away from Clara!”
