It made perfect sense.

I set down my coffee cup and looked at him like he was just another stranger asking for help.

“At the last gala, we signed with a new partner. Supplier bidding’s already live.”

He asked in a low voice, clearly hurt, “Do you really have to go this far?”

I’d had enough. I stood up and kept moving toward the door.

“You protected yourself from me openly. Why couldn’t I do the same in private?”

“If nothing unexpected happened, no one would’ve gotten hurt. Right?”

We both knew exactly what “unexpected” meant.

After work, a dark figure lunged out from around the corner.

I dodged on instinct.

A fire axe slammed into the ground inches from my foot.

It was Piper. Her eyes were bloodshot. All traces of her usual charm and energy were gone.

“This is all your fault!”

“Declan’s clawing back everything he ever gave me! He’s trying to blacklist me!”

“If you hadn’t made such a scene over the divorce, he’d never have done this!”

She screamed and swung the fire axe at me again.

I dodged to the side, but the blade still caught my arm, slicing it open.

Blood welled up instantly.

Security rushed over at the noise and restrained her.

Piper fought wildly against them, screaming and cursing like a woman possessed.

I pressed the towel security handed me against my arm. Then I looked at her.

“Did I make you the other woman?”

“Did I push you to go after my bag?”

“Declan’s a cheater. But you’re not exactly innocent.”

After Piper was taken away by the police, I got patched up and left the hospital.

Declan had already been waiting outside for some time.

His eyes went red when he saw my bandaged arm.

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out for a long moment.

“I’m sorry…”

Then his expression hardened.

“Colette, I’ll handle this.”

I didn’t respond.

What I didn’t expect was for a video of Piper attacking me with the fire axe to end up online.
