The custom couture gown and jewelries Piper had been wearing was already off her and back in

its box.

“Colette, I know I messed up. I ignored how you felt. I’m sorry.”

He held out his pinky, like he always did after a fight.

“Let’s never do this again. Okay?”

I didn’t look at his hand.

“Declan, you know this isn’t me being petty.”

“You signed the divorce agreement yourself.”

Declan’s lips trembled.

“I didn’t read it carefully. That doesn’t count.”

“Will a judge see it that way?”

His face went pale.

“We still need to wait for the court to finalize the divorce. I can change my mind.”

“Even if in court, the judge will give me another chance.”

By the end, his voice had turned pleading.

“Colette, you can’t do this.”

“You can’t end our marriage over a bag, a dress, or a piece of jewelry.”

“I have money. I’ll buy you more clothes, more bags, bid on all the jewelry you want…

“Just don’t divorce me.”

I listened quietly until he finished.

Then I spoke, “It was never about the bag. Or the clothes. Or the jewelry.”

“Then what?” Declan asked. “Is this because of Piper?”

“There’s nothing between us. It’s strictly professional.”

“You didn’t like her wearing your dress, so I made her give it back.”

See? Men know exactly what women are upset about. They just pretend they didn’t.

As long as they claim ignorance, anything they do feels justified.

“Is giving her everything I wanted and promising her everything you have something a normal boss does for his secretary?”

Declan froze.

I went on. “You hid your burner account well.”

“Hers wasn’t nearly as well hidden. Any coworker could’ve found it.

“Or maybe she didn’t bother hiding it. A woman climbing the ladder always leaves a few

breadcrumbs.”

I smirked. “You can change your mind. I’ll still win in court.”

I didn’t wait to see Declan’s reaction.

I didn’t even go back to the Ashford estate.

Not long after, Maeve, who had resigned and joined Lotus with me, knocked on my office door.

“Colette, Declan found me.”

“Did you tell him where I was?”

Maeve shook her head.

“No. He called in his official capacity, so I thought I’d check with

“Colette, does it have to be like this?”

“I made a mistake. The kind men make. I fixed it. Why can’t you forgive me?”

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I asked, “Is that all you came to say?”

His lips moved. Something calculating flickered in his eyes.

After a moment, he finally spoke, “Colette, our companies complement each other. They’ve been working together for years without either of us knowing.”

“Without Piper, our partnership could take both companies even further.”

“Ending the partnership now will hurt your bottom line too. You don’t have to go this far over

me.”

“I don’t care that you hid your assets from me. For the money alone, wouldn’t it be smarter to keep things as they are?”
