From Mafia Wife to Empire Queen Chapter 01

From Mafia Wife to Empire Queen Chapter 01

My husband, Luca Moretti, brought his third pregnant mistress straight to my law firm.

He wanted me to draft a property gift agreement for her.

His caporegimes stood by, placing bets on how many seconds it would take before I broke down and smashed up the entire office.

I printed out the thick stack of legal papers without uttering a single word.

“Don Moretti, this is already the third one. Could Donna Vera be hiding something up her sleeve?”

Luca rubbed his temples, his voice low and gravelly.

“Her health has always been fragile. She can’t endure the hardship of childbirth.”

“This child will be registered under her name the moment it’s born. The title of Donna of the Moretti Family will always belong to Vera.”

As he finished speaking, I handed over the officially stamped agreement.

Sticking strictly to professional protocol, I reminded him flatly, “This agreement is now legally binding and fully enforceable.”

Luca took the papers, his brows twitching almost imperceptibly into a frown.

He slid a divorce settlement across my desk, his tone softening deliberately.

“Just sign this. It’s nothing but a formality.”

“Her health is robust. Once she gives birth, we’ll have the baby adopted to you. My mother will stop hounding you over being unable to conceive.”

“You’ll always remain our Donna. I’m only doing this to protect you.”

I’d already played this charade twice for Luca.

This time, I picked up the pen and signed my name without the slightest hesitation.

Then I lifted my left hand, displaying the engagement diamond ring Salvatore Ferraro had given me.

Luca seemed to have forgotten one crucial detail.

He suffered from congenital azoospermia—he could never father a child.

If I wanted to be a mother, I could simply choose a healthy man who actually could.

Did he truly believe I’d cling to the empty title of Donna and raise illegitimate children fathered by other men, just to save his pride?

Emma Brooks gently stroked her heavily rounded belly, her voice syrupy and delicate.

“Don Moretti, is Vera upset with me?”

“Look, she’s already wearing a brand-new ring on her finger.”

Luca’s gaze locked onto the diamond on my ring finger.

His brows knotted tightly, clear displeasure flashing across his eyes.

“Vera, know your limits!”

“Do you really think a cheap trinket like this will make me change my mind?”

I pushed the signed divorce agreement back toward him.

“My signature’s on it. We meet at the County Clerk’s Office at nine tomorrow morning.”

A heavy silence hung over the office for a heartbeat.

Then Luca’s men burst into loud mocking laughter.

“Vera, this cat-and-mouse game you’ve been playing has gone on for three years. Aren’t you tired of it yet?”

“Exactly. Don Moretti only wants an heir of his own bloodline.”

“You can’t have kids yourself, yet you won’t let anyone else carry one for the family. That’s plain selfish.”

Luca massaged his temples, clearly growing weary of my unyielding attitude.

“Vera, drop this petty act!”

“Emma’s carrying twins. Her doctor said her pregnancy is high-risk and she needs complete rest.”

Emma nestled herself tightly into Luca’s chest, her eyes glistening with tears.

“Don Moretti, I don’t want my baby to be born living in hiding, away from the light of society.”

She lifted her head, staring at me timidly.

“Could I borrow your luxury high-rise downtown to rest through my pregnancy?”

“The security there is top-tier, and it’s minutes away from the best private hospital in the city.”

That penthouse was my sole inheritance from my parents, who’d passed away in a tragic car crash years ago.

“That property is my separate premarital asset.”

Emma flinched back as if terrified, fat tears streaming down her cheeks instantly.

“Vera, I didn’t mean to upset you. I only ever thought about what’s best for the baby.”

“If you truly don’t want to help, I’ll just take my unborn child and move back to the countryside alone.”

Luca pulled her closer protectively, then turned to me with an uncompromising, commanding tone.

“Vera, why must you haggle over trivial matters with a pregnant woman?”

“That apartment sits empty anyway. Move out tonight and let Emma take residence.”

I stared hard at Luca’s familiar face.

I suddenly felt nothing but ridicule for the woman I once loved so deeply.

“Luca, do you have trouble understanding plain English?”

“That house belongs to me.”

Luca’s expression turned cold and stormy.

“Vera, it’s just one apartment. Once the babies are born, you can move right back in.”

“Emma’s with child right now. You need to think of the bigger picture for the Moretti Family.”

His crew piled in to back him up.

“Vera, Emma’s doing the Morettis a huge favor by carrying the next generation. How can you refuse her one simple apartment?”

I held Luca’s gaze steadily.

“What if I refuse to move out?”

Luca let out a cold sneer and pulled out his phone.

“Your law firm’s biggest client is the Moretti Group, isn’t it?”

“Vera, you’re a smart woman. You know exactly what will happen if you force me to use my influence.”

He was willing to threaten the career I’d built from scratch, all for his mistress.

I looked into his arrogant, certain eyes and suddenly laughed softly.

“Fine. I’ll move out.”

Luca froze for a second, clearly shocked I’d agreed so easily.

A flicker of smug triumph crossed his face, and his tone softened slightly.

“That’s the sensible choice. Behave yourself, and I’ll make sure you’re well taken care of.”

“Pack your things and move back to the family manor tonight. I’ll send Tom to handle Emma’s move-in tomorrow.”

I stood to my feet, sweeping my gaze over every person in the room.

“I’ll clear out the place tonight without delay.”

“Luca, I hope you never live to regret this decision.”

Luca scoffed dismissively.

“It’s just a favor to let her rest comfortably during her pregnancy. The apartment will always be yours. Save your dramatic idle threats.”

Emma lifted her chin, shooting me a blatant triumphant smirk.

I paid them no further mind, turning on my heel and walking out of the office.

As the door clicked shut behind me, I could still hear his men’s mocking jeers.

“Once those twins are born, Don Moretti will be a father of three!”

Father of three, indeed.

I hoped he’d still be grinning when the truth finally crashed down on him.
