From Mafia Wife to Empire Queen Chapter 02

That night, a brutal thunderstorm rolled over New York City.

I headed back to my downtown penthouse to pack my belongings.

There was barely anything to sort through.

I hadn’t kept a single item belonging to Luca in my home.

I only took my parents’ memorial portrait, along with Biscuit, my Ragdoll cat who’d been my companion for five long years.

Biscuit seemed to sense my sorrow, gently licking my fingers in quiet comfort.

The smart lock on the front door beeped softly.

Luca walked in, soaked to the bone from the pouring rain.

He spotted my packed suitcase by the door and frowned deeply.

“You’re actually leaving for good?”

“Vera, I told you to move back to the Moretti family manor. Why are you packing like you’re leaving for good?”

I zipped up my final coat bag.

“We’ve already signed the divorce papers. What place would I have staying at the manor?”

“You’d do better focusing all your attention on your precious twins.”

Luca strode forward in two long steps, slamming his hand down hard on my suitcase to stop me.

“Have you thrown enough of a tantrum yet?”

“I told you the divorce is nothing but a formality. Why insist on making a scene?”

“Where do you even plan to go without me, without the backing of the Moretti Family?”

His eyes held unshakable certainty.

He truly believed I could never survive independently without him.

I brushed his hand off mine with brute force.

“Where I go is no longer any concern of yours.”

Luca’s face darkened, ready to fly into a rage.

Before he could speak, Emma’s call blared through his phone.

Muffled sobs filtered through the speaker.

“Don Moretti, I’m so scared all alone…”

“The thunder is terrifying, and my stomach hurts badly. Is something wrong with my babies?”

Panic flashed across Luca’s face instantly.

“Don’t be afraid, Emma. I’m on my way right now.”

He hung up the phone, shooting me a cold, icy glare.

“Vera, you’d better pray nothing happens to Emma’s unborn children.”

“If anything goes wrong, I will never forgive you.”

With that, he rushed straight out into the torrential rain.

I watched his desperate retreating back, overcome with bitter amusement.

Where was he when I’d been rushed into emergency surgery for acute appendicitis?

He’d been busy booking a grand venue for his first mistress’s baby shower.

I closed my eyes, forcing those humiliating memories deep down into the back of my mind.

I grabbed my suitcase, held Biscuit close in my arms, and walked out of the penthouse forever.

The next morning, I arrived promptly at the entrance of the County Clerk’s Office.

I waited until closing time, but Luca never showed up.

His phone went straight to voicemail every time I called.

Just as I turned to leave, one of his men called me.

“Vera, have you no conscience at all?”

“Emma went into premature labor last night. Don Moretti stayed by her side at the hospital all night long. How can you still pressure him for a divorce?”

“Do you honestly want his unborn children to die?”

My voice remained calm, completely devoid of emotion.

“If he’s too busy, we can reschedule the divorce date.”

“Tell him to have the divorce penalty fee ready, too.”

I hung up the call and headed straight to my law firm.

The moment I stepped through the front doors, I could feel the tense, heavy atmosphere hanging in the air.

My assistant Zoe rushed over to me, on the verge of tears.

“We’re in huge trouble!”

“The legal department of the Moretti Group just sent an official email unilaterally terminating all cooperation contracts with our firm.”

“Worse still, they’ve spread word across the entire business community that anyone who works with us will be marked as an enemy of the Moretti Group.”

I froze mid-step, my gaze turning sharp and cold.

Luca was trying to force me into submission.

He thought cutting off my firm’s major revenue stream would make me beg for his mercy.

I opened my laptop to find over a dozen termination emails waiting in my inbox—all from the high-profile clients I’d spent years cultivating.

My phone buzzed with a text from Luca.

[Apologize to Emma, promise to behave and stay in your place as Donna, and I’ll restore all our firm’s partnerships immediately.]

[Vera, don’t push my patience any further!]

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at his arrogant, patronizing message.

He would always carry that superior, entitled attitude, acting as if he was granting me some great favor.

I ignored his message entirely, blocked his number, and dialed another contact.

The call was answered almost instantly, a deep, magnetic male voice sounding through the receiver.

“Finally gotten kicked to the curb by Luca, have you?”

I stared out the office window at the New York skyline.

“You win, Salvatore Ferraro.”

“I’m walking away from all Moretti Group cases entirely. But I need you to do one favor for me.”

A low chuckle rumbled from the other end of the line.

“Anything you ask for, Vera. I could lay the entire city at your feet if you wished it.”

“Tell me what you need.”

My eyes turned ice-cold, each word sharp and deliberate.

“I want the Moretti Group’s capital chain to collapse within one month.”
