The ballroom erupted in a wave of shocked murmurs.

Dorian looked like he’d been sucker-punched, his face a mask of disbelief.

“Mr. Hawthorne, you’re… you’re joking, right?”

He could barely form the words.

“She’s my fiancée. She’s just angry right now—”

“Fiancée?”

Evander cut him off.

He held my hand, pulling me closer to his side.

Then he lifted his gaze to Dorian.

“Didn’t she just dump you?”

“Mr. Lombardi, is there a problem with your hearing?”

Dorian choked, speechless.

His eyes fell to our joined hands, and his expression curdled.

Chloe finally realized the situation had spiraled out of her control.

She gathered her skirts and hurried over, desperate to salvage the moment.

“Mr. Hawthorne, please don’t listen to Hannah.”

“She’s always like this. She threatens to break up whenever she gets mad.”

“The person she really cares about is Dorian.”

“We’re all friends here. She’s just joking. Please don’t take her seriously.”

Evander turned his head and gave her a look.

It was as cold and sharp as ice.

“You don’t get to speak.”

Chloe’s face went white.

She froze, looking as if she’d been slapped in front of everyone.

Evander dismissed her with a final glance and turned to his assistant.

“Show Mr. Lombardi the gift I brought.”

The assistant nodded and tapped his tablet.

The large screen at the front of the ballroom flickered to life.

The slideshow of Dorian and Chloe vanished.

In its place was surveillance footage.
