Mom held me tight. “What do you want, Lila? Do you forgive 

them?” 

I looked at their desperate faces. Then I shook my head. 

“No. I’ll never forgive you.” 

Those words drained all color from their faces. 

Mom smiled. A gun appeared in her hand. 

“Then it’s simple. I’ll kill them all.” 

My heart jumped. 

Before I could react, she shot all four of them. 

They stared at her, stunned. They hadn’t thought she’d go 

that far. 

Mom looked at me and smiled gently. “Don’t be scared. They 

deserved it.” 

I stared at the gun. 

She shrugged. “Before I started winning them over, I had a 

mission fighting off monsters. I kept a few things.” 

With the main characters dead, the world began to crumble. 

We returned to our world. 

Mom decided we should visit Grandma. 

As soon as we opened the door to find Jax waiting. 

He clung to us like a lost puppy. The main system had fired him. He had nowhere to go. 

Mom didn’t want to take him in, and told him to leave. 

“You used me,” he whined. “You said you’d-” 

Mom covered his mouth before he could finish. 

She dragged him aside to whisper. 

I’d seen the way they looked at each other. 

In the end, Mom let him come with us. 

When we arrived, Jax volunteered to carry the gifts. 

I finally asked Mom the question I’d always wanted answered. 

“Mom… who is my real father?” 

She leaned in and whispered a name in my ear.
