My mom shrieked. Terrified.

“Connor! Have you lost your mind?! Stop!”

The crash from the living room hit my ears.

I threw down the clothes I’d been sorting. Scrambled out.

“What happened?!”

Connor was a beast off its chain.

Eyes bloody. Fist after fist into Harrison’s face.

And Harrison. I couldn’t tell if it was on purpose. He didn’t fight back. Just raised his arms. Passive defense.

The blood in my veins shot to my skull.

I didn’t think. Rushed them. Shoved Connor with everything I had.

“Connor, are you insane?! This is my house! Get out! Get the hell out!”

Connor stumbled back. Stunned.

He stared at me. Standing guard in front of Harrison. The fury in his eyes cracked. Something else bled through. Hurt. Disbelief. Despair.

In all our years. No matter how mad I got.

I’d never spoken to him like this.

Middle school and before. I followed him like a tail. Called him Conny.

High school.

First crush.

I started calling him Connie. In secret.

Everyone else called him Connor. I wanted the exclusive. The name only I used.

He complained it sounded girly. But he’d just mess up my hair. Resigned. Let me.

Later. When we made it official in Chicago.

Even in our worst fights. I called him selfish at most.

Never this.

Never pointing at the door. Telling him to get out. No mercy.

“Harper. For this bastard you just met a few days ago. You’re telling me to get out?”

He was shaking. Voice shattered.

It wasn’t about Harrison.

It was five years of swallowed hurt. Five years of being lied to. Every ounce of that erupted now.

I looked at him cold. Didn’t give him the grace of an explanation.

“Maddie’s waiting at home. Stop acting like some street thug. Go back where you belong.”

“You know it’s my wedding night. Do you know what happens when I go back?!”

Still testing. Still using that childish provocation. Betting I still cared. Betting jealousy would make me beg him to stay.

I smiled. Exhausted.

“You and Maddie are legally married. Whatever happens between you in bed. It’s protected by law.”
