Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 13

She turned stern again. Eyes sharp on me.

“Harper. I don’t care what couple’s quarrel you two had in Chicago. You never curse someone dead in a car crash. I spent two days actually thinking he’d died. I had nightmares about finding you a therapist.”

Harrison stood there. A trace of a smile. Watching me. Silent.

The absurd events of the past two days reeled through my head.

Something thick clogged my throat. Took a long moment before I squeezed out words.

“I know.”

Small-town tradition. Day after the wedding. The newlyweds fly off to their honeymoon.

Maddie had it all planned.

Yesterday she’d posted photos on Instagram. A luxury cabin in Aspen. Ski trip.

Connor didn’t follow her script.

His wedding night. He didn’t go back to their rented bridal suite.

He showed up at my house. Hammering the door like a madman.

My mom stared at him. Suit disheveled. Standing on the porch.

“Connor? It’s your wedding night. Why aren’t you with Maddie? What are you doing here?”

“Brenda. I need to talk to Harper. Urgently. Can you call her down?”

On the drive over. He’d called me. Over and over.

Every time. The carrier’s automated voicemail.

It hit him then. Belated.

I’d blocked his number. Completely.

He tried WhatsApp. Red exclamation mark.

In that moment.

This man. Always in control. Always ahead. He tasted real panic for the first time.

“What do you need with Harper?”

Before my mom could press.

Harrison appeared at the entryway. Casual. Gray loungewear. That half-smile aimed at Connor outside.

“Bit late. What brings you here?”

Connor’s pupils shrank. Panic ignited into fury.

Harrison kept that infuriatingly calm smile.

“I was gonna crash at a motel. But Brenda said the guest room’s open. No point sending family to some dump.”

“Are you shitting me?!”

Connor snapped. Completely unhinged. Eyes bleeding red.

He charged up the steps. Fisted Harrison’s collar.

“Harrison. Say that again. I dare you.”

Under that murderous glare.

Harrison didn’t blink. He smiled. Provocative.

“I said. My wife’s mother told me—”

Connor’s fist smashed into his cheekbone.
