Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 15

“Harper!!!”

Desperation or rage. Pushed to the breaking point. His body shook like a leaf in autumn wind.

My mom watched. Completely lost. She stepped in with conventional logic.

“Connor. Harper’s right. Maddie’s waiting for you. Today’s your big day. You left your bride alone in the bridal suite. Came here causing a scene. What is this?”

“If the neighbors hear, the whole town will be gossiping about Maddie by morning.”

“I don’t give a damn what anyone says about her!”

Connor snapped. Past caring. He lunged forward. Grabbed my wrist again. Grip like iron.

“Harper. You’re my real girlfriend. You’re the only one I care about. Say the word. Tomorrow morning I’ll file for annulment. Divorce Maddie. Just say it.”

“What the hell are you saying?!”

My mom heard those outrageous words. Voice pitched wild. She rushed over. Shoved Connor back.

“Connor, have you lost your damn mind?! If this gets out, what happens to our Harper in this community?!”

“And what do you mean, she’s your girlfriend? Your wife is Maddie!”

“No!”

Connor’s eyes pleaded. Like a child caught in a lie. He turned to my mom.

“Brenda. I’m the boyfriend. The one Harper’s been with in Chicago. Five years. I was a coward. Used my startup as an excuse. Refused to come home with her to meet you.”

Before he could finish.

A crack split the air.

My mom’s palm connected with his face.

She was shaking. The sweet Midwestern mother mask obliterated.

In her eyes. Fury at being played. Heartbreak for me.

“Connor. You’ve had too much to drink tonight. Go home. Sleep it off.”

“Brenda.”

“Get out of my house!”

I had never seen my mom this livid. Not once in my life.
