Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 08

In this town, scandal burns indiscriminately.

If this really blew up.

I could grab a plane ticket to Chicago and never look back.

But this is where my parents have lived their whole lives.

Their book club. Church friends. Even the cashier at the grocery store they go to every week.

I couldn’t light a match for my own satisfaction and leave them to choke on the smoke.

“But you did nothing wrong! If you don’t speak up, who’s ever going to know what you suffered for five years?!”

My pulse stayed flat.

But Harrison looked ready to explode.

I stared at him. Baffled.

I’d seen him at a few business mixers in Chicago. That was it. We’d exchanged nods. Maybe a few words. Nothing more.

I couldn’t understand why an outsider was more worked up than I was.

“Harrison, why exactly are you—”

I was about to ask what the hell his problem was.

My mom Brenda stepped out from around the corner. She yanked me behind her. A mother hen shielding her chick.

She looked Harrison up and down. Pure Midwestern matriarch judgment. Withering.

Her voice dripped vinegar.

“Well. Look who decided to show up. The big Wall Street hotshot who’s too busy ringing the bell to spare Thanksgiving. What’s the occasion? Decided to crash someone’s wedding?”

Harrison blinked. Clearly caught off guard.

But he’d been fighting in the business trenches for years. Recovery was instant.

“Mrs. Brenda. I’m so sorry.”

He dialed down the aggression. Stood straight. Tilted his head with absolute sincerity.

“I was a complete jerk before. Made Harper upset. I promise you, it will never happen again.”
