Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 07

Connor’s body moved. Pure instinct. Trying to shake Maddie off.

But Maddie’s nails bit deep into his arm. Almost breaking skin.

Her meticulously done-up face crumbled. Pleading. Broken. Tears brimming.

Her voice shook. Only loud enough for them.

“Connor. Please. Whatever this is, we’ll explain to Harper after the cake. Right now. Finish the ceremony. My dad’s in a hospital bed waiting to watch our wedding video.”

I knew this community’s unspoken rules.

I held back for my family’s dignity in this town.

Maddie was doing the same. Guarding what scraps of face her family had left.

She was desperate to protect this wedding. This gilded, life-saving performance.

She couldn’t imagine the fallout. If Connor publicly called it off now. Confessed everything. She and her sick father would become the joke of this entire social circle.

And worse.

Without Connor’s insurance safety net, she’d drown in hospital bills.

Connor’s jaw turned to stone. His chest heaved.

But he didn’t take that step. Just pinned me with his stare.

“Sorry, everyone. Our little internal disagreement interrupted the celebration. Band, please keep playing. Wishing the newlyweds eternal happiness.”

I smiled. Flawless. Unassailable.

I grabbed Harrison, still half-stunned, and hauled him out the ballroom doors.

We reached the end of the thick-carpeted hallway before Harrison snapped awake. Stopped dead.

He turned on me. Gripped my arm. Eyes full of interrogation. Disbelief. Something close to anger.

“He made a fool of you. Why didn’t you expose that hypocrite in there?”

I leaned against the wall. Met his stare. Calm.

“Because I didn’t want to upgrade this scene into a town-wide scandal.”

“You think if I screamed to everyone that Connor’s a dirtbag and my best friend stabbed me in the back, they’d be the only ones to look bad?”
