Five Years of Secret Love, He Married My Best Friend Chapter 09

My mom had a whole speech chambered. Acid. Ready to fire.

He disarmed it with a textbook-perfect apology.

She’d made up her mind. If this guy showed one trace of arrogance, she’d force us to break up. Wolf of Wall Street be damned.

But this tall, handsome man in a tailored suit. He was humble.

“Ahem. Young men being career-driven is understandable. No need to be so formal.”

I watched Harrison’s Oscar-worthy sincerity. The question marks in my head multiplied.

But my mom was right there. I couldn’t call him out.

“Oh goodness. I’m not some old fossil.”

The storm on my mom’s face cleared. Sunshine broke through. That motherly grin. The one reserved for sizing up a daughter’s boyfriend.

“I just worry Harper hides the bad news. Makes up stories. Invents some boyfriend to get me off her back.”

“Since you flew all this way for the wedding, why didn’t you say something earlier? I would’ve sat you at the family table. Introduce you to all the aunts and uncles.”

“Mom!”

Every hair on my body stood up. Alarm sirens wailing.

“He’s got a video conference. Needs to leave right now.”

“No rush. I’m free. I saw your head table had an empty seat. Adding one more chair shouldn’t be a problem.”

Harrison cut me off without hesitation. Shot my mom a perfect all-American grin.

My eyes went wide. Behind my back, I dug my nails into his suit sleeve. Voice a hiss.

“Are you insane?! I was wrong to drag you into that mess in the ballroom. You don’t need to go this deep into character.”

“I—”

Harrison started.

My mom already had his arm. Beaming like a sunflower. Dragging him back into the ballroom.
