As the camera moved toward my in-laws’ bodies, Ryan’s eyes widened. He grew more uneasy by the second.

A startled cry escaped him.

He held his breath as the camera neared their faces.

Before he could see them, Chloe stepped in front of the screen.

“Don’t look, Mr. Carter.”

“Why would you want to see dead bodies? It’s gruesome.”

She wrapped her arms around him, refusing to let him look. He finally relaxed in her embrace.

He looked down at her, smiled, and nodded obediently.

“You’re right. They’re just two bodies. What’s there to see?”

I watched them coldly. Neither seemed to think there was anything wrong with the way they were holding each other.

That was when I knew our seven years together were over.

One glance at the screen would have told him those were his parents.

Chloe turned to me and ordered me out.

“Emma, isn’t it time you left?”

“Your parents just died. Shouldn’t you be crying and arranging their funeral?”

I shook my head with a cold smile.

“Ryan’s the one who needs to arrange a funeral.”

“My parents aren’t dead. My in-laws are.”

Still in Chloe’s arms, Ryan’s expression changed. He fixed his eyes on me, his face tightening with anger.

“Stop saying my parents are dead!”

“They’re perfectly comfortable at home!”

“If they’d wanted to go to Valdoria, they would’ve called me themselves.”

“They wouldn’t have sent you to ask for money.”

I shrugged, keeping my expression innocent and my voice matter-of-fact.

“Did you forget?”

“You’re the one who wanted to play the big-shot CEO and have me stay home.”

“You said I had to come to you for every household expense. Every last dollar.”

“That’s why they came to me. I told you exactly what they wanted, and you approved the million.”

“But they never saw that money. Chloe only gave them a hundred—”

“Enough! I’m so sick of this!”

“All you ever talk about is money!”

“It’s the only thing any of you care about.”

Nothing was getting through to him. There was no point arguing.

“So no matter what I say, you won’t believe your parents are dead?”

“Fine. I’ll prove it.”

I left the office and headed straight to where my in-laws had been found.

When I got there, I finally saw the terrible state they were in.

My father-in-law had a broken leg. Something had bitten off one of his hands.

He appeared to have bled to death.

My mother-in-law looked even worse. Her face was mottled purple and white, and one eye was gone.

She appeared to have died from a venomous snakebite.
