It took me a while to realize this was probably my birthday gift.

Probably not.

If I really left, he wouldn’t be that upset.

If anything, he might feel relieved.

Otherwise, Asher would’ve driven me into endless emotional burnout.

At least now, I could still sit beside him in class the next morning, acting like nothing happened.

“Leaving so early? Did you eat?”

I rested my chin on my hand and looked at him casually.

“Yeah.”

His answer was flat, mechanical.

Morning light brushed across his features.

I stared for a moment, then silently cursed myself.

No wonder I couldn’t let go—not with a face like that.

I was a little surprised.

Asher never ate breakfast. His stomach wasn’t great because of it.

Over the years, I’d been the one forcing him to eat, piece by piece.

“Roselyn, I brought Asher breakfast!”

A voice suddenly popped up from his other side.

I raised an eyebrow.

It was the same girl from yesterday.

Her tone was cheerful, but there was a hint of something else underneath.

Like she was trying to prove she had a special place beside him.

But I knew Asher.

If he ever actually liked someone else, he’d dump me immediately.

To him, nothing mattered more than the endless equations in his head.

The only reason he got together with me in the first place… was physics.

That was my twenty-first time trying to win him over.

Like always, I sent him a message, not expecting a reply.

That afternoon, I remember it clearly.

There were exactly four minutes and twenty-seven seconds left before class ended, and he replied, [I like you too.]

Those five words hit like an explosion.

In that instant, I ran through every possible explanation.

Maybe he lost a dare.

Maybe his account got hacked.

Maybe he mistyped and meant “I don’t like you.”

Then five minutes later, another message came in.

[Do you want to be with me?]

I felt like I’d burst into fireworks.

Later, I found out the truth.

A girl in his department had threatened to jump off a building because of him.

His academic advisor got involved.

He found it annoying.

So he used me to solve the problem by telling everyone—he already had a girlfriend.
