Carter texted me to meet at some coffee shop.

When I walked in, I almost didn’t recognize him.

Skinny. Unshaven. Dead eyes.

The second he spotted me, he practically threw himself at me.

Grabbed my wrists. Voice shaking.

“Mia… God, I’m so sorry! I screwed up everything!”

I pulled away.

“Back off.”

“Just hear me out!” His eyes were wild. Red-rimmed. “Jade played me! She lied about everything! She sabotaged the

company!”

He was unraveling.

“I didn’t cheat-she tricked me! I was wasted and she-”

Then he dropped.

On his knees. Clutching my leg.

“Mia, you saw me when I was nothing. I couldn’t stand it. That’s why I left! I wanted to prove I didn’t need you-”

His voice broke.

“But I was wrong! It’s all gone! The company! The money! Jade took everything and bolted!”

Tears everywhere. Snot running down his face.

“You’re the only one who ever really cared! Please! Come back! I swear I’ll-”

I looked down at him.

Nothing.

Not anger. Not sadness. Just… nothing.

This was the guy who promised forever.

Now he was sobbing at my feet and I felt empty.

I sipped my coffee.

“Carter. You ever see me at rock bottom?”

I set the cup down.

“Night before my wedding. My fiancé screwed someone else. I was a complete joke.”

I paused.

“Where were you? Oh right. In bed with your ‘soulmate.””

His face drained of color.

“Now you’re broke and suddenly I matter again?”

I crouched down. Eye level.

“You want me back?”

Cold smile.

“When you dumped me, did you think about this?”

He froze. Mouth working. No sound.

“You said ‘Jade’s back. I can’t let her go. Like I was trash.”

My tone stayed flat. Sharp.

“Told me I was embarrassing. Pathetic. Ripped me apart.”

Beat.

“Did you picture yourself here? Begging?”

His hand reached out. I stood up.

“My family built you. Dad’s connections. Our money. Our reputation.”

Voice like ice.

“Those investments? Dad forced them through. Those contracts? You got them because of us.”

I took a breath.

“Then you made it big and kicked me out. Played house with Jade. Acted like some tragic hero.”

I pushed down the tightness in my chest.

“You didn’t lose everything today, Carter. You lost it when you canceled our wedding.”

I headed for the door.

“This is just payback. You earned this.”

I stopped. Glanced back.

“You threw me away without blinking. So why should I look back now?”
