Graduation trip—they’re through the gate, I’m stuck outside.

Blake smacks his head. “Oops! Got Summer’s ticket, forgot yours.”

Summer squeezes my arm. “Girl, save your money! We’ll go next time.”

They walk off laughing, real close.

Done being stupid.

I call home: “Dad? That marriage you wanted? Count me in.”

Second call: “Blake Turner’s job offer?

Train home. Phone buzzing nonstop.

Blake’s messages pile up.

“Willow, I swear I didn’t mean to.”

“I was halfway through checkout when Summer drunk-dialed me from some dive bar.”

“What was I supposed to do? Let her get roofied? You’d never forgive me.”

My thumb hovers over the screen.

I remember that night.

We were on the phone, laughing, flirting.

I texted him a million question marks.

Nothing.

My chest tightened. I bolted out the door—no shoes, no jacket.

Pavement tore up my heel. Blood smeared with every step.

Kept running anyway.

He walked right past me.

November wind cut straight through my tank top. I stood there shaking.

Next morning, Summer sat cross-legged on my bed with the first-aid kit he’d dropped off for her.

She dabbed my cut with hydrogen peroxide.

“Girl, he was just trying to keep me safe. Didn’t want you stressing out.”

Big smile. “Honestly? He did it because he loves you.”

I wanted to ask her.

Why do you always call him when you’re wasted?

Why does he drop everything—including me—when you need him?

But I didn’t.

Now her text lights up my screen.

“Weren’t you just telling me you wanted to lock him down after graduation?”

“Think of this trip as my thorough background check for you, babe.”

“You’re welcome, btw. I’m taking one for the team here.”

My vision blurs.

Those words sting like rubbing alcohol on an open wound.

Just yesterday I was in her bed, wrapped around her, talking about the future.

“Summer, you and Blake are literally my whole world.”

“The second we graduate, I’m marrying him. And you have to be my maid of honor.”

She went rigid for a second. Then melted back into the pillow.

“Don’t worry, babe. I’ll definitely be at your wedding.”

Hot tears roll down my cheeks now.

I don’t text her back.

Just pull up our group chat.
