Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 35

Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 35

I picked up my work again.

Three years later, the DR Congo was even worse. Armed groups controlled more territory than ever before. Food crises, cholera outbreaks, sexual violence, kidnappings.

This place had started to feel like somewhere God had given up on.

Every day surrounded by what looked like hell.

I kept asking: does any of this mean anything? Am I just recording a loop of tragedy? The world sees the suffering here. And then what?

And for MSF: were they prolonging hope or prolonging pain?

No one could say whether surviving in a place like this was a gift or a cruelty.

A few months later, Adam found me.

He’d tracked down five of the children from three years ago.

Including Liam and Marie.

They’d made it out that night. Eventually found their way back to relatives. They were living in Kisangani.

I got there as fast as I could.

My car had barely stopped when Marie came sprinting out.

She threw herself into me, eyes full.

“Lena! You finally came!”

She’d grown tall. She was a young woman now.

She looked past me into the car, urgent.

“Where’s the doctor? Why isn’t he with you?”

I paused.

“He’s busy.”

Marie immediately twisted her hands together.

“Did something happen to him?”

Children who’ve lived through death hear everything in the spaces between words.

I shook my head firmly.

“No. He’s fine. Look.”

I scrolled through my phone.

And realized: I had no photos of Julian.

After coming home, I couldn’t bear to look. I’d locked them all away in a folder on my laptop.
