Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 34

Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 34

He hadn’t shown up at the wedding.

His parents were furious. He searched everywhere.

When he finally reached one of my colleagues, they told him I’d gone to the DR Congo.

He refused to believe it. He made a scene at the network. Nearly got arrested.

I sighed.

I didn’t understand it. He had someone he loved. What did it matter where I was?

But I didn’t want to keep making things difficult for my coworkers. So I called him on video.

The second it connected, the air went out of me.

He looked destroyed. Unshaved, hollowed out. The room behind him was dark and smoky. Empty bottles on the floor.

“Lena?”

He rubbed his eyes. Stared.

“Is it really you?”

Then he made a sound. Half a laugh. He buried his face in his hands.

“So you ran all the way to Africa over a few things Jade said? Are you serious?”

I was about to hang up.

Then I saw it.

Something falling through the gaps in his fingers.

“How could you play with your own life like that?

“How could you make me worry like this?”

I felt something strange.

“You’re worried about me?

“The whole reason we were together. You needed a wife for your parents. I needed something to hold onto. There was nothing real between us.”

He cut me off, voice cracking open.

“To hell with nothing real.

“Do you know: the night of that dinner, I went after Jade but the whole time I was thinking about you. How were you going to get home, how much had you drunk.

“Your camera broke. I ran to every camera shop in the city trying to find another one. They all said it was too old. I got a contact overseas, flew there myself, and brought it back.

“Then you just vanished. They said Congo. I looked it up. Couldn’t sleep for nights.

“You made me fall for you, and then you left.

“How could you do that.”

His eyes were red.

His expression. Like a dog left in the rain.

“Come back?”

He dug the engagement ring out of his pocket. Voice low.

“We can reschedule. I’ll only ever marry you.”

We looked at each other for a long time.

I smiled.

“Brendan. You’ve never even really known me. So what exactly are you saying you love?”

“Who is Jade to you. Who are you to me. You think I ran away over that?”

“I came back because the person I love is here.”

His pupils shrank.

He swept everything off his desk.

“Who? Who is he?”

I ended the call.

“You don’t need to know.”
