Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 01

Betrayed On My Wedding Eve Chapter 01

The night before the wedding, I found a spreadsheet on Brendan’s laptop.

It was full of information about every girl he’d ever dated.

My row said: Stable. Low-maintenance. Marriage material.

His first love’s row said: You’re a bird. Fly far. Be proud of it.

He said he’d never marry her.

Because his wife had to cook, keep the house, raise his kids, wait on his parents.

He couldn’t put her through that.

He said it like it was kindness.

I didn’t fight. Didn’t make a scene.

The next morning, I went back to the network.

Brendan didn’t know. I had a form too.

A transfer request. War correspondent. Africa.

The person I actually loved was still out there.

I was going to go find him.

“You want to go back to the field?!”

The newsroom went quiet except for that one voice.

I slid the transfer form across the desk.

“Yes. I want to be based in the DR Congo.”

“Lena.” My editor-in-chief went silent for a long moment. “You’re good. Everyone knew that three years ago. But you just got engaged. You’re literally on pre-wedding leave. That place is dangerous. Would your fiancé even agree to this?”

I paused.

“There’s no wedding.”

“What?”

I looked at him steadily.

“I’m calling it off.”

Yesterday Brendan had gone out to pick up wedding favors. He asked me to pull up his shopping list from his laptop and send it to him.

I clicked the file labeled Wedding Plan.

It wasn’t a shopping list.

It was a log. Six women. Height, appearance, family background. Detailed notes on each.

My entry was first.

Name: Lena.
Family: No parents. Simple social ties.
Personality: Domestic type. Stable, no ambition.
Notes: Good at housework. Capable of raising children.

He’d highlighted four words at the bottom.

Marriage material.

My stomach dropped. I paused. Then kept scrolling.

The others had similar verdicts.

Spends too much. Pass.
Lazy habits. Pass.
Has a younger brother. Pass.

But the last entry.

Nothing. Just a name and a photo.

One line in the notes:

You’re a bird. Fly far. Be proud of it.

Her name was Jade.
