Before Our Divorce I Discovered My Husband Had Loved Me All Along Chapter 12

Ethan fell into step beside me, taking my heels from my hand.

“You look happy,” he said.

I nodded. “That obvious?”

“You’re practically skipping.”

I said nothing.

After a beat, he added, “Is divorce really that exciting?”

I didn’t have an answer. “Maybe.”

“My legal team is slow. A divorce could take a year. Can you wait?”

I considered. “Then let’s just do it clean-I don’t want anything.”

He stopped and looked at me seriously. “But they’re actually very good. If I don’t want to finalize, they can drag it out for a decade.”

“What are you saying?”

He shrugged. “Exactly what I said. I don’t think our marriage is beyond repair.”

Now I was genuinely lost. Ethan didn’t love me. Why wouldn’t he let go?

Before I could ask, he scooped me up and carried me to the car.

Inside, warm, I shrugged off his jacket and handed it back.

His eyes ran over me. “I do have good taste. That dress looks stunning on you. You never wore it, so

I figured you didn’t like it.”

“No-I love it,” I said automatically.

“Then I’ll buy you more.”

“That’s not what I-”

“Maya.” He took my shoulders, turned me to face him, his voice soft. “I know this is going to be a

mess, but I’ve thought about it a lot. Grandpa was right—I haven’t used my words.

“Look, from where I’m standing, you hit me with divorce out of nowhere. But I went back through

everything and I realized something changed the night you asked about homecoming.”

“So I’m thinking—Avery showing up made you question me. And yeah, I had feelings for her once. That ended the day we graduated. The second she cashed that check and walked, I told her-I

respect her choice, but we were done.”

“That’s just who I am. A breakup is a breakup. Marriage is marriage. I don’t go into something like this half-assed, and I don’t cheat-not on you, not on anyone.”

The car hummed along the quiet road.

All I could hear was our breathing, and my own racing pulse.

“Maya,” he said with a crooked smile. “Say something. I’m kind of nervous here.”
