Questions tumbled out of me, one after another.

“The day your driver took me-why weren’t you wearing your ring?”

“I wear it every day. It was getting scratched, so I sent it for polish.” He glanced at my hand. “You’ve

never worn yours.”

A three-carat stone. Heavy.

“And your passcode-299299?”

“You know it.”

“What does it mean?”

“It’s my old password. I’ve used it since I was thirteen. Nothing special.”

“You had dinner with Avery.”

“She’s the rep for our UK partner. I didn’t know until she added me on social.”

“Then that night you wanted to talk-what about?”

His expression turned serious. “I told her I was married-to you. She… mentioned some things

about your past.”

What did Avery tell him? That I was unwanted, isolated, a thief?

“In high school, you were just a blur to me. I was young and self-absorbed-I didn’t pay attention. And I regret that. I wish I had. That night I wanted to ask about those years, but you looked tense- and I figured maybe you didn’t want to talk about it.”

Too much information-my head spun.

“Then that call-when you told Avery you didn’t want to wait anymore?”

He frowned, thinking hard, then his face cleared. “You mean the project. Their team kept stalling- the board is voting to pull the contract.”

“But she told me-”

“Maya.” He cut me off. “I don’t know what she told you. But I promise you-I never gave her a hint of hope. Not a single word.”

The car’s heat fogged my thoughts.

He took my hand. The freshly polished ring was warm against my skin.

“So-no divorce? I have my principles, but if you say it again, I’ll… put up a fight.”

“I… don’t know.”

“That’s okay.” He squeezed my fingers. “Take your time.”
