Dinner was at The Old Tavern, near the school.

Avery sat at the head of the table, soaking up the compliments.

“Where’s Ethan?” they asked.

“Busy-he left early,” she said.

I’d just gotten a text from Ethan, “Where are you?”

I sent a photo of the table. He didn’t reply.

“So come on-tell us about that ring on his finger.”

Avery flushed, turned away. “Don’t ask.”

Everyone grinned, assuming she was shy.

Someone caught my smirk and turned on me, “Maya, looks like you’ve done well for yourself since

graduation.”

“Yeah,” I said evenly. “Pretty well.”

“Good for you-after everything, you made it.”

Tiffany jumped in, “I mean, you stole my money back then because you were desperate, right?

Water under the bridge-I forgive you.”

“Got proof?” I cut in.

“What?”

“Proof I stole your money. Because if you don’t, that’s slander.”

Silence crashed down.

Avery tried to mediate, “Tiffany misspoke-let me apologize for her. We’re all classmates-”

“Exactly,” I said, still smiling. “Classmates are easy to find. And easy to sue.”

I stood and swept my gaze over every face.

They might not remember me. But I remembered every one of them-every name, every word they’d ever said.

For years, a thorn had lodged in my chest. Now I yanked it out-along with all the weakness I’d

carried.

“A lot of you owe me an apology. I showed up today to see if anyone had actually changed. Clearly

not.”

“You’re still the same shallow, small-minded people you’ve always been. And if anyone tries to pull that lying crap on me again-I’ll see you in court.”

Dead silence as I walked out.

I didn’t know what they’d think. But I’d just torpedoed their reunion-and it felt deliciously

satisfying.

I carried my heels, walking barefoot through the streets, aimless.

Until a blazer settled over my shoulders.
