After the Real Heiress Came Home, the Fake One Went on a Killing Spree Chapter 04

Bad news kept coming from the ballroom. Not just for the Hayes, but for all the guests who were their

clients.

Every contract the Hayes had signed-with partner banks, vendors, big accounts-everyone said the same thing. They would only work with me, Sloane Hayes. Only recognized me.

Wherever I went, they went.

Grant’s face went green.

He turned toward the door where I’d left and nearly stumbled. “Go get her! Now!”

Brynn frowned. “Why do we have to let her push us around?”

“If Sloane can do it, so can I. Let me try.”

Grant closed his eyes. “You try? You? Forget it.”

Everyone went back to their own disasters. The gala broke up early and quietly.

I sat at a bar, sipping red wine and smiling. I imagined the Hayes were losing their minds right about now.

My best friend Kelsey Vance found me looking so relaxed she slapped my arm. “Seriously? You just set off a

bomb tonight. Everyone’s talking about you.”

“Saying what? That I’m ruthless? That I play dirty?”

“All kinds of things. But nobody says you’re bad at your job. That’s impressive.”

She gave me a thumbs-up. I shrugged. “It’s what they asked for.”

I never went looking for fights. But the second they underestimated me, the second they tried to screw me

over-I wouldn’t forget it. If I wasn’t happy, neither were they.

“That’s right,” she said. “So what’s Brynn’s deal anyway? Why come back now and demand the company right

away?”

“I don’t know what her angle is. But I know one thing-she’s not as shy and clueless as she looks. No rush.

Let her try running the Hayes and see how easy it is.”

Kelsey nudged me. “Speaking of… your guy is here.”

I looked up. Cole.

I laughed coldly. “He’s not here for me. The Hayes-Sutton engagement is still on paper. He’s supposed to

marry Brynn, not me.”

Kelsey rolled her eyes. “If he’s really that dumb, he wouldn’t have held onto his position this long. Look, he’s

coming.”

Cole walked up to me. His expression was unreadable. “We need to talk.”

“Nothing to talk about. You should go find your new fiancée. She really needs your help right now.”

My sarcasm made him wince. Kelsey slipped away to give us space. Cole sat next to me and poured me a

drink.

“I know you’re angry. The other day, what I was trying to say was-cancel the engagement, sure, but then let’s

just get married. You hung up before I could finish.”

“Married?” I laughed. “Cole, do I look like I’m three years old? I know you. If you actually wanted to marry me,

you would’ve been on my doorstep the next day. But it’s been a week and you did nothing. Now you show up

and say that? You think I’m stupid?”

“I’m not some kid you can play. The truth is, you saw she can’t win. You’re just covering your bases. That’s

why you came crawling back to me. Am I right?”

His face fell.

“See? Hit the nail on the head.”
