After the Real Heiress Came Home, the Fake One Went on a Killing Spree Chapter 02

Cole asked to meet.

“Sloane… our engagement is a little complicated.”

I’d known Cole for over a decade. The second he said that, I understood. I kept my voice steady. “So you found out I’m not really a Hayes, and now you want to break off the engagement?”

He stayed quiet. And those ten-plus seconds of silence told me everything.

“Fine. But it’s not just up to us. The Suttons and the Hayes have to work this out together. Don’t they?”

After a long moment he said, “Okay.”

I hung up and let out a long breath. I felt lighter.

For ten years I had worked my ass off for the Hayes, brought the company to a whole new level. The engagement with the Suttons was a mutually beneficial business deal.

I thought I’d been a pretty good fiancée. Cole and I got along well.

We understood each other. We protected each other’s reputation in public. I thought we actually trusted each other.

But one change in my status, and look how fast that fell apart.

I shook my head, packed up the last of my things, and was about to leave when Brynn and my parents came back.

Money really is something. The shy, awkward Brynn from yesterday was already wearing nice clothes. She looked completely different.

Still a little tan, but that’ll fade once she’s had some time and money.

She saw me with my bag and blinked. “Are you leaving?”

I nodded. “It’s not convenient for me to stay here.”

“I come back and you immediately leave. Do you have a problem with me?”

My mom’s face went dark. “Sloane, what’s gotten into you? Brynn just got here and you’re giving her attitude every chance you get.”

“Mrs. Hayes, let’s not play games. Yesterday you all were discussing in the family chat how to kick me out of the Hayes house. I’m just doing what you said. Is there a problem?”

Her face froze. “I… they were joking. That’s not what we meant. The Hayes can certainly afford to keep you. Doing this is just humiliating all of us.”

I smiled. “If that’s not what you meant, then why did you already talk to the Suttons?”

“Cole Sutton broke off our engagement today. I already gave everything back. So moving out now is exactly what you want. Unless you want people saying the Hayes family has two daughters and you didn’t actually give birth to twins.”

My words made her stagger. Brynn jumped in. “Sloane, why do you have to talk like that? Mom just means well.”

“But the place you’re living in now was paid for with Hayes money. If you really want to cut ties completely, you shouldn’t—”

I stopped and turned to face her. The shift in my energy shut her up fast.

“The money I earn is mine to do with as I please. You don’t know whether I depend on the Hayes or the Hayes depend on me? That’s fine. But make sure someone teaches you some manners later.”

Then I walked out. My mom called after me, “Sloane! Sloane!”

I didn’t look back.

They were forcing me out today. They’d be begging me to come back soon enough.

But I didn’t expect that right after I left, my dad called. “Sloane, they don’t get it, but you should. Let everyone keep a little dignity. Don’t make a scene, alright?”

“Your sister’s welcome home party is tomorrow. You have to come.”

I smiled and didn’t say anything.

My assistant heard I’d left the Hayes and stuck with me. “Wherever you go, boss, we go.”
