After the Real Heiress Came Home, the Fake One Went on a Killing Spree Chapter 03

My whole team said they’d support me.

What Brynn didn’t know was that the Hayes hadn’t stayed on top all these years because of some old-money reputation. They’d stayed on top because of me, Sloane Hayes.

But I’d still go to her gala.

The Hayes went all out. It was at Stonehaven Estate.

Everyone who was anyone showed up. So did I.

When I arrived, a few rich socialites I used to be friendly with gave me smug looks.

“Sloane? You actually have the nerve to show up? Kicked to the curb and still strutting around like you own the place.”

“Right. This party is so over the top—you can tell she’s the real daughter. Meanwhile you spent years being their workhorse and now you’ve got nothing to show for it.”

“Hey, maybe beg me for a job. Our company just happens to need a receptionist. You’ve still got a decent face. Fifteen bucks an hour?”

I looked them over and scoffed. “No wonder your families keep those illegitimate kids around instead of letting you run the company.”

They lost it, but before they could come at me, Brynn appeared.

They backed off.

“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to the Hayes’ welcome-home gala. We’ve finally found our long-lost daughter, Brynn Hayes. From today on, we will do everything to make it up to her.”

Brynn walked onstage in an evening gown. With makeup, she looked noticeably more elegant.

But the whole thing felt forced. Top-heavy.

Her eyes met mine. She lifted her chin.

“Even though Sloane isn’t my parents’ biological daughter, she’s worked at the company for many years. I’d like to let her keep working there.”

“Sloane, don’t keep fighting with Mom and Dad.”

Everyone stared at me, eyes full of mockery.

I smiled. “No thanks. I’m not short on money.”

“You’re really not,” Brynn said. “Unlike me. I was miserable out there, but I never stopped learning.”

“Sloane, if possible, I hope you’ll stay. Work for me.”

My parents came to my side. “Sloane, I’ll forget you moving out. But your sister is right. The Hayes raised you all these years. It’s time you gave something back.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Ten years. I took the Hayes from a third-rate family to a top-tier one. You really think that’s not enough?”

“Work for her? I only work for myself. If the boss can’t hold onto me, don’t expect me to break my back for them. You taught me that yourself, Mr. Hayes.”

His face turned purple with anger.

My relatives all piled on.

“Look at her. Still acting like she’s the Hayes princess.”

“Without the Hayes, what is she? How dare she run her mouth.”

“Brother, you’re too soft. Kick her out already. She’s taken Brynn’s spot long enough and doesn’t even have the decency to be grateful.”

Brynn looked down at me, smug. I laughed. This idiot actually thought all these people were on her side.

I gave a short laugh. “You don’t have to kick me out. I’ll leave. But remember this—once I walk out that door today, I’m done with the Hayes for good.”

“Sloane!” My dad was angry, but then he sighed.

“Don’t blame us for being harsh. You really should tone it down.”

“Fine. Then go ahead and announce it right now. Publicly declare that Brynn Hayes is in charge of the company.”

“I quit.”

I turned and walked away. The first thing I did was send out a mass message—I was done with Hayes Holdings.

As I left, Brynn stomped her foot. “Dad, she’s so petty. She—”

Before she could finish, Grant Hayes’s phone rang.

Not just his. Everyone in the Hayes family started getting calls.

“What? MC will only work with Sloane? The contract is void?”
