After His Affair, I Skipped the Drama and Chased Mediterranean Sun Chapter 04

I miscarried before I even knew I was pregnant.

Gavin sat beside my hospital bed, guilt written all over his face.

“Evelyn, this just wasn’t the right time. Once you’re doing better, we’ll have another baby.”

I stared at him numbly, but I still caught the flicker of relief in his eyes.

This was the second baby we had lost.

Three years earlier, when I became pregnant for the first time, Natalie moved in to take care of me.

That was when she met Gavin.

After that, Gavin started coming home less and less. Then, one night, Natalie didn’t come home either. I slipped in the bathroom, started bleeding heavily, and miscarried.

It was after that night that I found evidence of Gavin’s affair and climbed onto the roof.

How ridiculous.

My two babies and I had all become sacrifices to their grand love story.

Gavin had clearly remembered it too. He no longer dared to meet my eyes. Claiming he needed to take care of the hospital bill, he fled the room.

The phone beside my pillow lit up.

“You think you miscarried because he knocked you down? He’s been tampering with your medication for years to keep you from having a baby. Even if you conceived, you were never going to carry it to term.”

“Evelyn, set yourself free. The longer you stay alive and stand between them, the stronger their relationship becomes. Only your death will brand them as monsters forever.”

I calmly ended the call.

There was no screaming, no hysterical breakdown, and no tears.

After I left the hospital, I became unnaturally compliant. I stopped checking up on him or questioning his every move. The more compliant I became, the more on edge they were.

Gavin finally couldn’t take it anymore and announced, “Something urgent came up at work. I need to leave town for a week on business.”

He watched me as though he had already braced himself for a screaming fit.

Instead, I simply said, “Okay.”

Then I looked at Natalie. “You must be exhausted from taking care of me too. You should rest this week. I can look after myself.”

They both froze. Neither had expected me to agree so easily, and all the excuses they had prepared died in their throats.

Gavin tested the waters.

“Evelyn, that day at the hospital… did you see something?”

I looked back at him. “See what?”

Relief washed over him when I denied it, and his expression softened.

“When I get back, I’ll take you to Switzerland to see the snow-covered Alps. How does that sound?”

I had wanted to visit Switzerland for three years.

I had brought it up to Gavin countless times, and every time, he had refused.

He said Switzerland was too far away and that I was too sick. I would only become a burden on everyone, so he would take me once I recovered.

Three years passed while I waited.

“Okay,” I said softly.

That night, the guest-room door had been left slightly open.

Natalie’s muffled sobs drifted into the hall.

“Gavin, aren’t we being too cruel to Evelyn? She just lost the baby…”

Gavin’s answer was resolute.

“I’m saving all of us.”

“If she stays here in the States, she’ll drive all of us insane sooner or later. Sending her to a residential treatment center in Switzerland is the best thing for everyone.”

So that was it.

He wasn’t fulfilling my dream, and this wasn’t an apology born of guilt. He planned to lock me away forever in the snow of a foreign country, clearing the last obstacle from the path of their grand romance.

I laughed without making a sound.

Why go to all that trouble?

I returned to my room, filled the bathtub, and climbed in.

When the blade cut into my wrist, blood unfurled through the water like a ribbon. I felt freer than I ever had before.

…

Early the next morning, Gavin finished packing and knocked on the bedroom door.

“Evelyn, we’re leaving. Take care of yourself while we’re gone.”

Only deathly silence answered him.

Usually, the moment he called out, Evelyn would come running barefoot and throw her arms around him.

Today, there was nothing.

A nameless sense of dread crept over him.

Gavin grabbed the handle and twisted it hard. Then his entire body went rigid.
