After His Affair, I Skipped the Drama and Chased Mediterranean Sun Chapter 03

My vision kept going dark as I stood on the winter sidewalk.

So Gavin had given me a diamond ring and a wedding and had cared for me in every possible way, yet he had stayed legally single, reserving the title of wife for my sister with unwavering devotion.

Even while pretending to be my husband, he had remained faithful to Natalie.

I laughed until tears streamed down my face.

Still clinging to one final shred of hope, I called my future self again.

“I need to know. Was there ever even one moment when he loved me?”

She was silent for a long time.

“Go to a private suite at Seabridge Medical Center right now. Then you’ll understand how stupid that question is.”

I drifted into the hospital like a ghost.

Inside the room, Natalie appeared to have a stomach bug and was dry-heaving.

Gavin, the extreme germaphobe who couldn’t tolerate the slightest unpleasant smell, was wiping the mess from the corner of her mouth with his bare hand.

I watched through the glass as tears spilled from my eyes without warning.

Six months earlier, I had vomited in the middle of the night because of side effects from my medication. What had he done then?

He had recoiled to the doorway as if he had been shocked, frowned as he called the housekeeper to clean up, and then shut himself in the bathroom to shower three times.

He had never looked back at me, even as I vomited so violently that I could barely breathe.

Why did nothing disgust him when it came to Natalie?

Gavin came out carrying a basin. The moment he saw me, he pulled the door firmly shut behind him.

His guarded expression softened when his gaze dropped to my bare feet and lips blue from the cold. He took off his coat and wrapped it around me.

“Are you insane? You ran out in the middle of the night dressed like this? You know how weak you are.”

Even now, he still remembered his promise to take care of me.

I stared at him, my voice unexpectedly calm.

“She’s in there, isn’t she?”

Gavin’s face darkened, and his grip on my hand tightened.

“That’s an important client. You’re having another episode. I’m taking you home.”

I shoved past him, threw open the door, and rushed inside.

“Evelyn!”

Gavin went white with panic.

At the sound of the commotion, the person on the bed screamed and yanked the blanket over her head.

I gripped the edge of it. All I had to do was pull it away and expose them, but I couldn’t make myself do it.

Even now, I still wanted to hear them admit the truth themselves.

Under Gavin’s terrified stare, I pulled a small knife from my pocket and held it against my chest.

“Gavin, pull back the blanket and tell me who that woman is.”

“Or I’ll die right here today.”

“Choose.”

Gavin didn’t move. The last traces of patience gradually drained from his eyes.

“Evelyn, do you really think threatening to kill yourself is going to work on me?”

“For three years, whenever something didn’t go your way, you threatened us with suicide. Do you really think this boy-who-cried-wolf routine is funny?”

Funny?

Every time I had reached the edge and begged for help, he had seen nothing but a pathetic performance.

The last spark of hope inside me went out.

I let out a soft laugh and drove the knife toward myself.

The color drained from Gavin’s face.

“Don’t you dare hurt her!”

He hadn’t even seen where the blade was pointed before he charged at me and kicked me so hard I went flying.

I slammed onto the floor, and a sharp pain tore through my lower abdomen.

But I didn’t cry. I simply watched as he shielded the woman on the bed in his arms, his bloodshot eyes fixed warily on me.

He thought I meant to kill her, so he had been willing to kill me to stop it.

In that moment, I was finally done.

“Gavin, game over.”

“Let’s get a divorce.”

His shock lasted only three seconds before he gave me a mocking smile.

“Stop testing me. If you really wanted to leave, you would’ve done it a long time ago.”

“This time, I mean it—”

A sharp crash cut me off.

The person on the bed was trembling so violently that she tumbled to the floor, landing among the shards of broken glass.

A muffled cry of pain came from beneath the blanket.

Gavin’s face changed instantly. Without hesitation, he scooped her up and carried her toward the door.

“Don’t be scared. Are you hurt? I’ll take you to a doctor.”

I lay on the freezing tile as a horrifying pool of red spread beneath me.
