After His Affair, I Skipped the Drama and Chased Mediterranean Sun Chapter 05

The handle clicked twice, but the door didn’t budge.

It was locked from the inside.

Gavin frowned and pounded twice on the door.

“Evelyn, open the door.”

There was still no answer.

Panic began creeping over him, though he didn’t even recognize it yet.

Natalie glanced at the closed door and said quietly, “Evelyn’s probably angry. I told you she’d be upset if we both left at the same time. Maybe we shouldn’t go.”

Just then, a dull thud came from inside.

The tension in Gavin’s eyes immediately disappeared. He assumed Evelyn was throwing things again to vent

her anger, just as she had for the past three years.

His voice turned cold.

“Evelyn, there’s a limit to how far you can take this.”

“We don’t have time to stand here all day. Take your medication and wait for us at home.”

Without another moment of hesitation, he turned and strode away with Natalie.

They drove to a nearby island resort.

Far from that suffocating house and from me, the unstable woman who could supposedly lose control at any moment, it should have been a relaxing, carefree trip.

Instead, an eerie heaviness filled the car.

Gavin held the steering wheel in a daze, watching the scenery slide past as an inexplicable unease tightened

in his chest.

“Gavin?”

“What?”

Natalie had to call his name three times before he suddenly came back to himself.

She studied his distracted profile. Sadness flickered in her eyes before she forced a smile.

“Our exit’s coming up. Don’t miss it.”

The moment the hotel-room door closed behind them, Natalie wrapped her arms tightly around him from

behind.

Her voice was thick with three years of suppressed longing.

“Gavin, we can finally hold each other without having to hide.”

His body stiffened. Before he could stop himself, he asked, “Aren’t you afraid of betraying your sister

anymore?”

Natalie shuddered and abruptly released him, stepping back.

Her eyes reddened instantly.

“I’m sorry. I was just too happy. I’m shameless. I never should have wanted this…”

Watching her sway as she cried, Gavin suddenly thought of Evelyn.

Evelyn had a temper and never backed down. Whenever the smallest thing went against her, she wore him

down until he was exhausted.

Natalie was different.

She was considerate and understanding. She had endured so much because of Evelyn over the past three

years.

Gavin sighed and pulled her into his arms.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Gavin, maybe we should go back. We can’t keep making this worse.”

Gavin cut her off.

“I promised you a week away, and I’m going to keep that promise.”

“As for Evelyn, she’ll throw a fit if she’s upset. I’ll calm her down when we get back.”

Natalie wrapped both arms around his neck and pressed herself against him.

“We’ve already betrayed her. A few more days won’t make a difference.”

“Gavin, just let me be selfish for seven more days. For this one week, you’re mine and mine alone. Please?”

Then she kissed him.

Gavin pushed down his guilt and kissed her back.

They lost themselves in desperate, feverish sex on the queen-size bed, as if it were the only way to erase the

image of Evelyn’s frail figure back at the house.

At three in the morning, Gavin jolted awake.

He remembered that Evelyn hadn’t taken her medication that day and instinctively reached for the pill organizer on the nightstand, only to find nothing there.

He paused, then turned his head and looked at the woman lying in his arms under the moonlight.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It was Natalie.

He rubbed his brow hard and gave a bitter, self-mocking laugh. Old habits were terrifying.

His phone lay silently beside the bed without a single unread message.

In the past, whenever he was gone for more than ten minutes, Evelyn would send him dozens of frantic

messages.

But they had been gone for a full day and night, and his thread with Evelyn was still buried at the bottom of

his message list.

Something was wrong.

He opened their thread and typed, [Don’t forget to take your medication.]

Just as he was about to send it, Natalie’s voice broke the silence.

“Gavin, what are you doing?”

“Nothing. Just checking the time.”

Gavin hesitated. He turned off the screen. Then he lay back down.

The room was dark and silent except for the waves crashing against the rocks.

Gavin stared at the ceiling, as if he were speaking to Natalie and trying to convince himself at the same time.

“Switzerland is too far away, and it’s too cold. Let’s keep her here in the States and find a treatment center

somewhere closer.”

In the darkness, Natalie’s eyelashes fluttered.

“Okay.”

“What? I literally saw her kiss him a minute ago, and he didn’t push her away.”

“So he’s out here with his side piece behind his wife’s back!”

“His wife is probably completely in the dark. Otherwise, why would she still be with a piece of trash like him?”

Gavin’s expression hardened as he listened, his fists clenching tighter and tighter.

He was about to turn away when the giant outdoor screen behind him suddenly cut to a local breaking-news

alert.

[Breaking News: A death was reported today at Harborview Estates in Seabridge. Authorities say it appears to be a suicide…]

At the familiar name of the neighborhood, Gavin stopped dead.

His blood seemed to freeze, and his body began to shake uncontrollably.

Memories slammed into him.

He remembered Evelyn calmly saying, “Let’s get a divorce,” at the hospital.

He remembered how unnaturally compliant she had become after she was discharged.

He remembered the tightly shut bedroom door and how no one had answered, no matter how hard he

knocked.

A horrifying possibility formed in his mind, and terror swallowed him whole.

Natalie returned and reached for him.

“Gavin, there’s a yacht over there. Let’s go-”

“Don’t touch me!”

Gavin violently knocked her hand away and demanded in a trembling voice, “Tell me something. Has Evelyn

contacted you at all this week?”

Natalie recoiled from his twisted expression and shook her head, her face pale.

“N-No.”

Uncontrollable fury surged into Gavin’s voice.

“She was seriously ill and had just miscarried. You’re her sister, and you went seven entire days without

checking on her once? Did you ever care whether she lived or died?”

Natalie stumbled backward, staring at the man who was suddenly blaming her for everything in disbelief.

Nearby, several tourists were scrolling through their phones and discussing the report.
