Abby’s face went pale. 

“I’m Abby.” 

“Oh.” 

I nodded. 

“So, what are you apologizing for?” 

She bit her lip. “I was immature back then. I kept texting Julian, and it made you misunderstand.” 

I laughed. 

“Misunderstand what?” 

Her eyes welled up. “He and I… we really were just friends.” 

I looked at Julian. “So your friend is doing customer service at my food truck now?” 

Julian stepped forward, his voice low. “Abby, go home.” 

Abby didn’t budge. 

She looked at me. “Sadie, I know you hate me.” 

“No, I don’t.” 

I untied my apron. 

“I’m actually pretty grateful to you.” 

Abby froze. 

I said, “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have seen things clearly so soon.” 

“I wouldn’t have seen what a man’s boundaries look like.” 

“Or seen exactly where a wife ranks in his life.” 

Julian’s face went white instantly. 

Abby’s tears started falling. “I didn’t mean to break you two 

up.” 

I nodded. “Right. You didn’t mean to.” 

“You just called him in the middle of the night whenever you 

had a fever.” 

“Just wanted him to watch the snow with you on your birthday.” 

“Just kept mailing him photos of you two as kids, knowing full well he was married.” 

“Just kept saying, ‘I hope your wife doesn’t mind‘, every single time.” 

I took a step forward, my smile fading. 

“Abby, I used to mind.” 

“But I don’t anymore.” 

“Whatever’s in the trash, whoever wants it can go ahead and 

pick it up.” 

Someone in the crowd let out a sharp intake of breath. 

Daisy whispered, “Boss, that was savage.” 

Abby couldn’t handle the embarrassment; the tears flowed 

even faster. 

“Sadie, how can you say that about Julian? He’s had such a hard time these past few years.” 

I almost laughed out loud. 

“What was so hard? The part where he had someone to make him hangover soup? The part where someone waited up until dawn on his birthday? Or the part where his mother bullied 

me, and he slept like a baby?” 

I picked up my menu board and shoved it toward Abby. 

“You want a Delusion Detox Combo?” 

“Since you’re a long–time customer, I’ll even add extra ice.” 

Abby’s face completely soured. 

Julian called out, “Sadie.” 

I looked at him. “Feeling bad for her?” 

He didn’t look away. 

“No.” 

“Then why call my name?” 

“I wanted to say… I’m sorry.”
