The most embarrassing moment of my life wasn’t when my ex-husband caught me running a food truck.

It was what I was actually selling, the “Drop Your Ex Baggage” Combo.

The combo included:

One hot dog, for a clean cut.

One cola, to cool the chaos.

And a handwritten greeting card that read: [Good Riddance, Jerk!]

Then the “Jerk” himself showed up.

He stood in front of the stand, staring at the menu, silent for a long time.

“This combo.”

My eyelids twitched.

He looked up at me. “Give me ten.”

I stayed put.

“Send them to the corporate office,” he added flatly.

I snapped. “Julian, are you out of your mind?”

He looked at me, his voice low.

“Yeah.”

“Didn’t realize it until the divorce.”

My tongs nearly jammed into the hot dog warmer.

A girl in line behind him covered her mouth, her eyes darting between us.

The woman running the lemon tea stand next door was more direct.

She leaned over. “Hey, did your ex really just show up?”

I gritted my teeth. “Just a customer.”

Julian Hollander glanced at me. “Not just a customer.”

I slammed the tongs against the grill. “Say one more word, and I’m charging you double.”

He shut up.

But he didn’t leave.

At over six-foot-four, he was dressed unusually low-key, yet he still stuck out like a sore thumb against the grimy backdrop of my stall.

I focused on packing the order.

Ten hot dogs, ten sodas, ten cards.

By the tenth card, I wrote the words extra large.

[GOOD RIDDANCE, JERK!]

Julian reached out, took it, and stared at it for a long time.

I expected him to get angry.

Instead, he asked, “Can you write one more?”

I sneered. “What? ‘Wishing the ex a one-way trip to hell’?”

He looked at me. “Wishing him luck in winning his ex-wife back.”

My hand slipped. My pen left a long, black streak across the card.

The girl in line gasped.

I slapped the card onto the table.

“Sorry. This stand only sells cards for trashing your ex, not for living in a fantasy.”
