Six months later, my name came up in discussions about Caden and Natalie once again.

After graduating from a business school in London, Natalie returned to Chicago and joined a nationally televised career competition show.

Caden was one of the show’s celebrity panelists.

Nora sat in my office, reading the comments aloud in an exaggerated voice.

I almost laughed.

Whatever show the Winter Group chose to sponsor had nothing to do with me.

My father was a businessman. The show drew plenty of attention, so sponsoring it was nothing more than a normal investment.

Besides, the family corporation had always been intended for my mediocre younger brother.

Otherwise, I would never have needed to build my own company from the ground up.

Nora turned off her phone and reached a conclusion.

“Natalie wants to be famous.”

She certainly did.

Using the attention she received as Caden’s childhood friend and a graduate of an elite school, she had paid for plenty of media coverage before the show even premiered.

I looked up from my work.

“At least she’s ambitious.”

I had always respected ambition.

Natalie did perform well on the show.

In the end, she secured a position at one of North America’s leading sports technology companies, where the female CEO personally became her career mentor.

What truly surprised me was Caden’s reaction.

Nora looked completely confused.

“He flew to London for Natalie, missed training, and strained his relationship with you because of her.”

“Now that you’re ignoring him and the fans are supporting the two of them, he suddenly comes out and denies the dating rumors himself?”

From the beginning, the show had used Caden and Natalie’s relationship as one of its main promotional angles.

But not long after the premiere, when the host teased him about it, Caden gave a serious explanation on the spot.

“There’s something I think everyone has misunderstood.”

“After my parents died, Mr. and Mrs. Reed adopted me.”

“Natalie and I grew up in the same family. To me, she’s more like a sister.”

“I hope she succeeds in the field she loves, but there has never been anything romantic between us.”

His statement immediately sparked widespread controversy.

The first people to become furious were the fans who had supported them as a couple.

“We spent years attacking Erin for the two of you, and now you’re saying you’re basically siblings?”

“Why didn’t you say that sooner?”

Caden reposted only one of those comments.

“I didn’t understand my true feelings before.”

“Someone once told me that life is long, and we have to allow ourselves to make mistakes.”

He never said my name, but everyone knew exactly who he meant.

It was obvious to everyone that he wanted to pursue me again.

This was probably the first time since becoming famous that Caden had faced genuine public backlash.

“We attacked Erin for him all these years. Don’t tell me he’s going to start chasing her again.”

“I feel like an idiot who cursed out a friend’s ex, only to find out the next day that they got back together.”

“I’m done supporting him.”

“I guess growing up together still can’t compete with money and power.”

“Objectively speaking, Erin is far superior to Natalie in looks, Pack rank, and ability.”

“Caden Fails to Win Back His Ex” quickly became a trending topic.

I happened to be in Boston on a business trip that day.

I heard that after Leon saw the news, he punched a heavy bag at the training facility until it split open.

By the time he left the practice facility, every related trending topic had completely disappeared.
