Acting for Survival- Playing the Innocent Heroine to Escape the Villain’s Trap Chapter 10

It was eleven o’clock at night.

Almost every shop had closed down.

Dim streetlights stretched our long shadows on the ground.

We walked all the way to the riverside.

A Ferris wheel glowed brightly across the riverbank.

Richard asked quietly, “Why Daniel?”

I repeated the prepared lines smoothly, “He’s handsome and fit. We’re both orphans, perfectly matched in every way.”

The wind picked up suddenly, and Richard narrowed his eyes against the breeze. “You said so many reasons, but you never said you love him.”

I licked my lips nervously, not knowing what to answer.

“You don’t love Daniel at all, yet you’re pretending to date him?”

“That’s my private business.”

Richard let out a mocking laugh.

“Private business? Then let’s talk about your private secrets.”

“You stared at me all the time back in high school.”

“Daniel got drunk once and told me I was your crush.”

“You never pushed me away when I kissed and hugged you drunk.”

“And that water you gave me before—do you really think I didn’t know what was in it?”

“You’ve done all of this…”

Richard put both hands in his pockets, wind messing up his hair.

He stared at me like a hunter watching his prey—provoking, absolutely certain of victory.

He let out a cold snort. “Dare you say you don’t love me?”

“I dare!” I answered firmly and loudly.

Richard choked suddenly from the wind and coughed heavily, tears welling up at the corners of his eyes. “What did you say?”

I stared straight at him without hesitation. “Mr. Smith, I don’t love you at all.”

Richard sneered in disbelief. “That’s impossible!”

I refuted every single point clearly.

“I stared at you in high school because your zipper was open.”

“You misheard Daniel drunk—he said you were my rubbish.”

“I didn’t push you away because you’re good-looking and have eight-pack abs. I’m just an ordinary woman with no reason to reject good looks!”

“And the water before—it wasn’t intentional. Otherwise I wouldn’t have rushed you to the hospital right away.”

Richard was defeated completely by my flawless excuses.

His expression shifted from shock to confusion, then to reluctant pride to save face.

Finally he laughed softly.

He lit a cigarette, the flame flickering dimly in the night wind.

His tone lazy and sarcastic.

“Good then.”

“I was about to mock your one-sided crush. Since you have no feelings for me, there’s no need.”

He emphasized coldly again.

“And for the record—I never loved you either.”

“I always thought you were just putting on an act all the time.”

My heart ached bitterly inside.

Yet I felt a secret sense of relief.

No matter if Richard loved me or Linda loved Daniel—it didn’t matter at all.

The two main characters could easily dispose of people and dump bodies into the open ocean without mercy.

Ordinary people like us could never afford to get tangled up with them.

Love is precious.

But life matters far more.
