I found an empty stairwell and dialed Daniel’s number.

It took him forever to answer.

“Richard showed me the photo of you carrying Linda princess-style! You’re going to blow our whole act!”

“She twisted her ankle. I had no choice.” Daniel paused. “But how did Richard find out so fast?”

“I have no idea either.”

Daniel clicked his tongue irritably. “I knew it. A few days ago Linda and Richard fought over a bidding project. The next day the tree in our office was completely drowned. There’s definitely a snitch around.”

“That’s ruthless,” I sighed.

“It proves Richard holds a grudge against everyone, even his own destined partner.”

I grew worried for him. “You didn’t do anything improper with Linda just now, right?”

“I absolutely didn’t!”

“Why are you getting defensive? What were you really up to?”

“I did nothing at all!”

Why are you yelling?

Daniel always shouted louder when he was guilty.

His mouth was impossible to crack.

But the bullet comments told me everything.

“You have to hold it back! Remember we’re the fake couple.”

I hung up the phone coldly.

When I turned around, Richard was leaning lazily against the doorway, watching me quietly.

The bullet comments panicked instantly.

After a long moment, my voice trembled out. “M-Mr. Smith?”

Richard grabbed my wrist firmly. “Come with me.”

“Where? It’s almost off work time.” I wasn’t offering any extra favors after hours.

I tried pulling my wrist free and avoided his gaze awkwardly. “I already promised Daniel we have a date tonight.”

Richard tugged gently, pulling me almost right into his chest. “Double overtime pay. Or do you want to lose your job entirely?”

“Mr. Smith, I’ve always been utterly loyal to you.”
