A notification chimed on Thorne’s phone.

Isolde’s handiwork.

Since when was she so efficient?!

I watched helplessly as Thorne opened his iMessage.

Until I saw that Isolde had sent him the number I used abroad.

Only then did my racing heart slowly settle back down.

Back in my room, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

Truth is, I haven’t slept well for years. I keep having dreams.

That whole thing really messed me up.

So much so that I haven’t dared to date anyone since.

Too scared of another messy, humiliating ending like before.

Then my phone buzzed on the pillow.

I picked it up and saw that familiar profile picture. I couldn’t help but pause.

Three years ago, Thorne had added me with that same little dog avatar.

Because I’d had a crush on him for so long, I’d already gotten his iMessage from classmates.

So I recognized him right away.

I still remembered his first message.

I typed it out but hesitated, afraid that if I sent it too fast, he’d think I was desperate.

After a long pause, I finally hit send.

After that, we chatted pretty regularly.

Mostly about everyday stuff.

Until one night, Thorne accidentally voice-dialed me.

I picked up, and all I heard on the other end was his heavy, ragged breathing.

I was too scared to say anything.

After a few seconds, I realized what he was doing.

My face went beet red.

Part of me wanted to hang up to save him the embarrassment, but another part didn’t want to.

Thorne’s voice was so good, so sexy.

Every breath he took seemed to land right on my heart.

I figured if I stayed quiet, he’d think I’d fallen asleep.

But it went on for a long time.

Almost without thinking, I whispered, “Do you want some help?”

That’s when Thorne realized the call was connected.

After some rustling, his voice came through, all rough and low.

“Yeah.”

Soon after, a satisfied sigh echoed through the phone.

From that night on, we called almost every night.

Thorne had suggested meeting up plenty of times, but I always made excuses.

My skin wasn’t great, I’d gained a little weight, whatever.

I dragged it out for half a year.

Honestly, when I heard Thorne say “Isolde,” I was completely shattered.

The first thing I did was text Isolde.

Yeah, you were always saying you wanted a boyfriend!

Just thinking about Thorne saying all those sweet, flirty things to me while picturing Isolde made

me sick.

I was angry at Isolde too, but really, it was my own fault for not asking.

I couldn’t even bear to think about what would happen if Thorne found out the truth and went after

Isolde for real.

So, I chickened out and ran.

Now, seeing that avatar on my phone again, just the words “Are you asleep?” were enough to throw me into a panic.

I agonized over it, then finally replied as casually as I could. “About to sleep.”

Thorne asked again. “I wanted to pick your brain about something. Can I take you to dinner tomorrow? Just the two of us?”
