At once, they danced for joy. 

Kael was especially overwhelmed, tears welling up in his eyes. 

“Elowen, you came back too. I never imagined I’d get to see you again in my life.” 

Elias stepped forward, reaching for us. “We can be a family again. Please don’t leave. We missed you much.” 

But then, Mom slapped him across the face. 

“How dare you,” she said coldly. “How could you treat my 

child like that?” 

The room went silent. 

Kael tried to speak. She slapped him too. 

She hit Jude and Silas next, one after another. 

I watched in shock. 

It was so cool! 

Mom was amazing! 

Four sharp slaps rang out one after another, four clear and matching handprints were on each of their faces. 

The four men didn’t fight back. They looked almost grateful. 

Silas even turned his other cheek. “Elowen, you should hit this 

side too.” 

Without hesitation, mom hit him again. 

The mood shifted suddenly. 

They crowded around her, begging for forgiveness. 

“We were wrong,” Kael said. “We shouldn’t have brought 

Elara into our home.” 

“We didn’t know she was lying. We’ve punished her. No one will hurt you again.” 

“Come home. We’ve missed you so much.” 

Mom smiled coldly. “Punished everyone? Then why are the four of you still alive?” 

They went pale. 

“You were the ones who locked her in a kennel,” she said. 

“You were the ones who hurt her. You were the ones who killed her for a stranger’s daughter.” 

Kael’s voice shook. “We were tricked. We loved her like our 

own, once.” 

I knew that was true. 

Once, they’d given me everything. 

But they’d also broken me completely. 

Elias turned to me, tears in his eyes. 

I stepped back in fear. 

He smiled sadly. “You’re afraid of me.” 

“I’m sorry, Lila. I promised to protect you, to keep you safe. I failed you.” 

He grabbed my hand and pressed it to his face. “Hit me. I 

should have been there for you. You kept us from being alone, too.”
