He Said Of Course to Everything, and I Stopped Loving Him Chapter 07

That evening, I was putting together the final evidence when Nolan came home.

He opened the study door, and I casually closed my laptop.

A flicker of disappointment crossed his face.

“Babe, you’ve really been treating me differently since you got back.”

“Have you… fallen out of love with me?”

I ignored him. Instead, something occurred to me, and I asked casually, “Aren’t you looking for a designer for your new project?”

Nolan looked surprised.

Then he sighed, looking tired and irritated.

“Yeah.”

“Sienna messed up the last project. She’s your best friend, and I’m your husband. Of course I have to help her get back on her feet. I’m planning to put her in charge of the next project, too, but I’m hiring another designer this time to make sure everything goes smoothly.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Then let me do it.”

After all, it was the perfect opportunity to expose everything.

“Really? Babe, are you serious? That’s great! You’ve actually got the training for this!”

Nolan rushed over, wrapped his arms around me, and leaned in for a kiss.

But as he came closer, I caught a familiar scent of perfume.

It used to be my favorite. Now it made me sick.

I instinctively pushed him away and stepped back.

Nolan stared at me, stunned.

In the past, I would have been the one throwing my arms around him.

“I’m going to the study to look over the designs for the new project.”

Without another word, I hurried away, never once looking back at him.

Nolan watched me leave, bewildered.

He was beginning to feel as though something was slipping out of his control.

He pulled out his phone and sent my mother a message.

Nolan: [Mom, don’t you think Lena’s been acting strange since she came back? I’m starting to

worry.]

The moment my mother received his message, she called me.

In the past, I would have picked up immediately.

This time, my phone rang and rang, but I never answered.

Early the next morning, I sent Nolan the project designs.

He immediately burst into the study and pulled me into his arms.

“Babe, you’re amazing! I’m holding a press conference today to announce the new project.”

“Oh, and our seventh anniversary is coming up. I’ve got a surprise planned for you.”

In all our seven years together, Nolan had never cared much for anniversaries. He’d always said celebrating them was a waste of time.

I gave him a distracted nod, then looked down at my phone and messaged my assistant.

Me: [Get everything ready for today’s press conference.]

At the press conference, I sat in the audience.

Nolan and Sienna were onstage, answering questions from reporters.

One question caught my attention.

“Mr. Cross, you and your wife have been such a devoted couple for years. What’s your secret to a happy marriage?”

Nolan instinctively glanced toward me and gave me a reassuring look.

Then he turned back to the reporter.

“Let’s keep the questions focused on the new project, please.”

Sienna, who was sitting beside him, froze.

It was the first time Nolan had ever avoided a question about their marriage in public.

“Now, let’s have Sienna Hale, the person in charge of this project, introduce what we’ve been working on.”

Sienna stepped forward, took the laptop, and pressed the button to start her presentation,

Nothing happened.

The laptop seemed to have stopped responding.

Then the large screens in front of her and all around the venue began playing a video that ran for more than ten minutes.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Hello, everyone. Today, I’d like to tell you a story that’s far more interesting than this new

project.”
