He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 08

Security escorted him outside. He twisted to look back at me, eyes red-rimmed, voice hoarse.

“Elowen, I’m sorry. Please help me. Please.”

I opened my phone and sent the video I’d just recorded of him on his knees to every single one

of his relatives.

Darien’s phone began buzzing non-stop.

His parents, uncles, aunts, cousins-call after call flooded his device.

Trapped out on the sidewalk, he fumbled, rejecting call after call like a hunted animal.

Finally his father got through. Even from several steps away, I could hear the older man’s

thunderous shouting.

“Darien! What the hell have you gotten us into? Two million dollars! How is our family supposed to pay that?!”

Darien’s hands shook.

“Dad, let me explain-”

“Explain nothing! Where’s Elowen? Make her fix this mess!”

Darien lifted his head toward me.

I stood on the building steps, watching him with complete calm.

His lips parted. He was about to call my name,

I turned and walked back inside.

The glass doors closed behind me, cutting off the unfinished cry of my name.

Back at my desk, my coworkers’ stares pricked at me like needles.

I offered no explanations. I kept working through my assignments.

Liana called.

“Ms. Voss, I’ve submitted our court filing. What would you like to do regarding your son?”

I paused for a beat.

“File a police report.”

Darien tore all over town searching for Lorelei.

He checked the school, rental properties, grocery stores, even a beauty parlor she had

mentioned once before.

Eventually he pulled her records at the police station.

She had a long string of prior criminal convictions. She was drowning in gambling debts.

Her husband was never dead.

The two of them had gone through a sham divorce and run an elaborate guaranty-fraud scheme together for years.

Darien called me from outside the police precinct. His voice was so raw he could barely form

full sentences.

“You knew this was going to happen, didn’t you.

“You deliberately chose not to stop me. You wanted to watch me get destroyed.”

I threw his own words back to him.

“What did you say when I tried to stop you with divorce?”

Only heavy breathing came over the line.

After a long silence, he forced out a sentence.

“We still haven’t found Kai.”

I hung up and started searching for the boy myself.

Building-security cameras were broken. The school only held a temporary contact number Lorelei had registered a month earlier.

I pulled every accessible record and cross-referenced them one by one.

I finally tracked her down. She was renting a short-term apartment in a neighboring city under

Lalse identity

I called the police.

Officers brought him in the very same day.

Kai sat on a hard chair inside the precinct. His school uniform was filthy. He had lost weight,

his jaw sharp and gaunt.

The second he saw me, those were his first words.

“This is all your fault.”

“If you’d just given Aunt Lorelei the money, she never would have run away and taken me.”
