He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 09

Even the police officers looked shocked.

A young female officer glanced between Kai and me, clearly trying to piece together the chaotic family dynamic.

I did not bother to justify myself.

I had Liana compile all evidence of the guaranty fraud to submit to law enforcement as materials from an affected family member.

Lorelei and her husband were arrested at the airport.

They had tickets for a flight south. On them, police found the six-thousand-dollar cash they had conned out of Darien, plus a photocopy of Kai’s birth certificate.

An officer asked me why they were carrying documents belonging to Kai.

I stared at that photocopy, cold dread crawling up my spine.

In my past life, one of the first things Kai had done upon turning eighteen was petition the court to legally change his last name to Veyra.

During police questioning, Lorelei gave her statement. That initial fifty-thousand-dollar loan had only been bait to hook Darien.

The real two-million-dollar promissory notes had already been traded off to cover gambling

losses.

As the guarantor, Darien remained fully liable for every cent.

When word reached him that Lorelei was in custody, he drove to the county detention facility demanding to see her.

Denied access, he sat out on the curb and wept.

A bystander filmed the scene and posted it online.

The video’s title read Man Faints From Weeping Outside Detention Facility For His Mistress.

I took Kai to the hospital for a full medical workup.

The ductor flipped through test results with a grave expression.

“Extreme emotional stress has put significant strain on his heart. His cardiac enzyme levels are abnormal. He needs inpatient observation.”

Kai sat in the exam room, head bowed, refusing to meet my eyes.

I completed admission paperwork and got him settled into his hospital room.

When nurses stuck him with an IV needle, he bit his lip. Tears rolled down his cheeks, but he

made not a single sound.

I stood beside his bed. I did not reach out to soothe him.

Darien burst into the hospital.

He spotted Kai in the hospital bed, sank down in the hallway, and repeatedly slapped his own

face.

Nurses hurried to step out of his way.

I stood nearby and looked down at him.

“Didn’t you call me cold-blooded once?”

“Now it’s your turn to be the compassionate hero.”

He lifted his head. His cheeks were swollen, his lip split. His eyes were hollow and unfocused.

“I messed up.”

“Elowen, I truly messed up.”

The words scraped raw out of his throat.

“I was blind. I was an idiot. I lost my mind.”

He stretched his hand toward my wrist.

I stepped backward.

“Save those apologies for your son.”

Inside the patient room, Kal turned his face toward the window.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“You both lied to me.”

Darien rushed over and dropped to his knees beside the bed.

“Son, I am so sorry.”

Kai turned his head and looked straight at him. A small smile tugged his mouth—exactly like

Lorelei’s smile.

“Dad, you’re even more disgusting than Mom.”
