The Muted Luna’s Revenge Chapter 05

The Muted Luna’s Revenge Chapter 05

The hospital room had been left spotless.

But the black coat in the corner was impossible to miss.

Kael recognized it at once.

It was his coat.

He’d draped it around Maeve that day because he knew needles and pain terrified her.

But Lyra’s condition had been more urgent, and he couldn’t get away.

So he’d left Maeve the coat, planning to come back for her after the blood draw.

But in the end…

He’d forgotten.

Now he stood frozen, unable to tear his eyes from the coat in the trash.

Mom paused too. “When did she leave? Why didn’t she tell any of us?”

She picked up her phone and saw my final message. [From this moment on, I have no ties to this family.]

She slammed the phone onto the bed.

“What is she throwing a fit about now? Where else can she go if she leaves this family? We raised her and protected her all these years. Is this how she repays us? She’s difficult enough on a normal day. Even in the hospital, she isn’t half as considerate as Lyra!”

Not as considerate as Lyra.

Mom had repeated those words constantly ever since Lyra was diagnosed with a heart condition in high school.

Whenever I refused to give in, she would say the same things.

Can’t you let your sister have this one thing?

“Lyra has a weak heart. Would it kill you to make allowances for her?”

“You’re nowhere near as lovable as Lyra!”

Now the words slipped out again, as natural to her as breathing.

Selene sighed.

“It’s fine. Maeve is always like this. Give her a couple of days, and she’ll come around.”

As she spoke, her gaze drifted to the table as she spoke. A key and a folded sheet of paper lay there.

It was the key to the Vale estate.

But the paper…

Frowning, she walked over and picked it up.

The next second, her face changed. “A-a letter cutting all family ties?!”

Everyone went still.

Mom’s knees buckled. She grabbed wildly at the bed rail and barely caught herself.

Kael rushed over to steady her.

But his own fingers were ice-cold, his palms slick with sweat.

The letter made it painfully clear that Maeve was cutting every one of them out of her life.

Selene read the few lines again and again, her mouth open but no words coming out.

Everyone knew how much family meant to Maeve.

When Mom had been misdiagnosed with kidney failure, Maeve alone had secretly undergone donor testing.

The day the results arrived, she ran home clutching the report, her eyes shining.

“I’m a match, Mom. You can have mine. Why are you crying? You’re my mother.”

In middle school, an anonymous message claimed Lyra had been kidnapped and ordered Maeve to come alone in exchange for her.

Maeve went to the abandoned warehouse without telling anyone.

Afterward, all she said was, “She’s my sister. If I don’t save her, who will?”

Even when Evelyn was critically ill and the hospital had no beds, Maeve spent three hours in the ER refusing to leave until they admitted Evelyn.

Everyone knew exactly what kind of person Maeve was.

That was why they’d felt free to torment her, prank her, and call it one big joke.

They all took it for granted that Maeve was too softhearted and too attached to them to ever walk away for good.

No matter how angry she became, all they had to do was soften their voices, apologize, and say a few nice things.

She would talk herself into forgiving them and return to their side.

But now…

That certainty was starting to crack.
