He Took the Wrong Turn on Our Wedding Day Chapter 07

I took my mom to the out–of–state hospital Elliot found.

It was far. He wasn’t kidding about that.

Elliot drove the whole way without complaining.

My parents and I didn’t know how to thank him.

When everything fell apart, he was the only one who actually showed up with a plan.

The specialist knew exactly what he was doing.

My mom’s recovery would take time and close monitoring.

But if she could heal, none of the rest mattered.

I never expected Elliot to be the one standing here with me.

He and Grant used to be close.

Former friends. I never found out what went wrong between them.

“Thank you.”

He waved it off.

“Don’t thank me. As long as your mom’s okay, that’s all that matters.” He paused. “I heard about the

wedding.”

I looked away.

I didn’t know how to talk about it yet.

Maybe what I felt was more anger than grief.

I never thought loving someone with everything I had would end like this.

Elliot didn’t push.

He showed me his phone: Grant had been blowing it up for days.

Grant really had been looking everywhere. He was desperate enough to reach out to Elliot.

“He’s a piece of work,” Elliot said.

The way he said it left no room for debate.

I went back to my mom’s room.

I’d already put my parents through enough by moving across the country.

I never imagined I’d drag them into this kind of suffering.

This was my fault.

My mom squeezed my hand.

“Thank God you didn’t marry him. Let’s just go home.”

I nodded.

My dad was with us. We were packing up to leave when Grant burst into the room.

The relief on his face made my stomach turn.

“Serena. Thank God. I’ve been looking everywhere.”

He reached for my bag.

My dad stepped between us.

“My daughter is done with you. Back off.”

Grant looked past him, straight at me.

“Serena, just hear me out. This was all Bianca. I had no idea she was pulling this stuff behind my back. I trusted her. I treated her like family. I never saw it coming.”

He was dumping everything on Bianca.

But he was the one who’d broken me.

Bianca made me furious, yes.

But she could never have destroyed me the way he did.

I looked him in the eye.

“Stop. I texted you. We’re done. The wedding’s not happening. And I’m selling the condo.”

He knew exactly what I meant.

The listing was already up.

The agent had already called him.

I needed my parents‘ down payment back. He could let the sale go through and split the equity, or buy me

out. I didn’t care which.

Grant’s face crumbled.

“Serena, does it really have to end like this? We were about to get married.”

Yeah. We were.

But he didn’t show up.

I had given him so many chances.

I never imagined my parents would get hurt because they came to see me married.

None of this was supposed to happen.

I’d pictured us happy.

We would’ve stood in front of everyone, said our vows, exchanged rings.

It would’ve been everything I’d dreamed of.

And he couldn’t even do that.

Grant scrambled.

“I can fix this. I’ll handle everything with your mom, all of it. I’m sorry. I didn’t know the clinic card was…”

I cut him off.

I didn’t want to hear “I didn’t know” one more time.

It meant nothing.

Whether he knew or not changed nothing.

“Grant, I was never the one you chose. Not once.”

He should go build a life with Bianca.

Grant refused to let it go.

“Give me one month. If I can’t change your mind, I’ll pack my things and move out.”

I was too tired to fight him on it.

Every time I opened the door to the hospital room, he was there.
