He Took the Wrong Turn on Our Wedding Day Chapter 02

Grant didn’t get it. He thought “off” meant “postponed” and that tonight could just be turned into a casual dinner party.

“Didn’t think it’d take that long. Let’s just call it a party; everyone’s having a good time anyway.”

One sentence. That was all it took to erase everything: my family’s heartbreak, the makeup I’d been up since four in the morning for, every dollar poured into the venue, the limousine rental, the reception.

Marrying this far from home had already worried my parents sick.

They hadn’t wanted me to move across the country in the first place.

Grant spent three months winning them over with promises, paying for the entire wedding, the whole show.

That was the only reason they let me go: they believed he’d take care of me.

At least we hadn’t signed the marriage license yet. I could still walk away clean.

My parents were devastated for me. They insisted on going to confront Grant themselves. They wanted answers.

They never made it. A car hit them while they were waiting at a crosswalk.

I got there as fast as I could.

My parents were the most cautious pedestrians I knew. How had this happened?

Then I saw Grant.

Bianca was standing next to him, white as a sheet.

As the paramedics loaded my parents into the ambulance, I pulled out my phone to call the police.

Grant grabbed my arm.

“It was an accident.”

I yanked my arm free. My voice was shaking.

“Then let the police decide that. My parents were standing completely still at the crosswalk. What kind of ‘accident’ hits pedestrians who aren’t even moving?”

I wasn’t letting this go.

Grant caught my wrist, hard enough to hurt.

“Bianca’s already terrified. Do you really need to blow this up? We can handle it without dragging the cops into it.”

“Do you really want to drag her through a police investigation?”

The ambulance was pulling away. I climbed in back with my parents.

While I rode with them, I called my lawyer friend and asked her to pull the security camera footage from the store at that intersection.

I knew Grant wouldn’t hand over his dashcam, so I’d find the evidence myself.

My friend sent me a clip from a nearby storefront camera. I almost couldn’t watch it.

Bianca never touched the brakes. She drove straight into them.

My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor.

When the doctor finally came out to tell me they were stable, I made my decision. I was filing a formal police report.

But Grant was already at the hospital. I didn’t even know when he’d arrived.

He grabbed my phone, deleted the video, and when he spoke again, his voice was ice.

“Serena, I looked into it. The brakes failed. Bianca panicked and failed to see your parents standing there. If she’d reacted any worse, the outcome would’ve been far more devastating. ”

I’d just signed two surgical consent forms.

“Grant, both my parents are in surgery. This isn’t small. Are you seriously going to protect her over my parents’ lives?”

That’s how much Bianca meant to him.

Enough to make him forget what was right.

Grant’s voice dropped, going gentle.

“Let’s handle this between us. I’ll cover the medical bills, whatever you want. But if you call the cops, we’re done.”

I bit down on my lip. “Then make Bianca get on her knees and beg for their forgiveness.”

Was that really too much to ask?

My parents were in surgery because of her.

Bianca’s eyes welled up.

“Serena, I’m so sorry. I swear I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

“I still see your parents falling every time I close my eyes. I’ll get on my knees. I’ll do whatever you want. Just please don’t take this out on Grant.”

She started to lower herself to the ground.

Grant caught her and pulled her back up.

“Enough, Serena. Bianca’s never gotten on her knees for anyone, and she’s not starting now. She’s already traumatized. She needs a therapist, not a trial. What else do you want?”

The tears came hard and fast.

“She put them in the hospital, and you’re worried about her trauma? Since this happened, has she apologized to my parents once? Even once?”

I walked over to the nurses’ station and asked them to call the police anyway.

I was done caring what Grant thought of me.
