He Took the Wrong Turn on Our Wedding Day Chapter 01

My fiancé Grant Calloway got lost on our wedding day.

The limo stopped two hundred yards from my house and just sat there.

I was too elated to worry and quickly made excuses for him.

“He’s terrible with directions. He gets all turned around when he’s nervous. He probably just missed a turn.”

Once I figured out where he was, I suggested moving the meeting spot.

“There’s a gazebo in the neighborhood park on his route. We can wait there. He’ll drive right past it.”

My parents didn’t like that I was the one bending over backward.

I told myself that’s what compromise looked like.

If he couldn’t make it to me, I’d close the gap myself.

I waited at that gazebo until the heat nearly ruined my makeup. Still no sign of him.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

I went looking for him myself.

That’s when I found the limo parked down the street, and heard him talking to one of his groomsmen outside.

“Wait, isn’t this Bianca’s place? You were just here yesterday for the dress fitting, and now you’re back again? Dude, are you picking up your bride or visiting your girlfriend? People are gonna think you’re marrying the wrong girl.”

Grant didn’t even deny it.

“Bianca wants to experience riding in the wedding limo and get the full experience. She takes forever with her makeup, so it’s not like we’re in a rush.” He sounded bored of waiting. But he was still there.

His friend suggested coming to get me first. Grant shut it down.

“I’m not gonna let Bianca miss out. We’ll pick her up first, then swing by for Serena. She won’t care. She’s chill like that. So what if we’re a little late?”

Every single compromise I’d ever made for this man flashed through my mind. They were all a joke.

I was calling off this wedding.

I walked back to the gazebo and grabbed my things.

“We’re leaving,” I told my parents. “The wedding’s off.”

My eyes burned.

My parents just stared at me. “What happened?”

I saw the sweat on their foreheads, and something cracked inside my chest.

They should’ve been sitting in an air-conditioned bridal suite.

They should’ve been watching their daughter walk down the aisle.

They shouldn’t have been standing on the side of the road, waiting for a groom who never showed.

The guilt was crushing.

I’d been so sure he was almost there.

I had been tracking his location on my phone. Two hundred yards on the map. He could’ve walked it in three minutes.

We had stood there for a full hour.

Back at the reception venue, I wiped off what was left of my makeup. The staff told me what I’d missed.

The guests had gotten restless, wondering when the reception would start.

The wedding coordinator had come by twice, asking if we were canceling the ceremony.

Neither the bride nor the groom had shown up to their own wedding.

Eventually, Grant showed up with Bianca Sutton.

He brought her straight to the venue.

He forgot about me.

By the time it occurred to him, the bride was nowhere to be found.

Bianca was in the middle of the crowd, with the guests cheering her on.

Her cheeks were pink. “Well, everyone’s already here. We can’t just send them home empty-handed.”

Grant nodded. Then he walked into my reception with her.

They toasted the guests. They posed for photos. And while everyone laughed and cheered, he linked his arm with hers for a champagne toast.

He texted me afterward.

[The wedding’s already ruined. I’m just going with it so things don’t get worse. Let her have her moment.]

[Stop overreacting. I’ll give you a bigger wedding next time.]

I stared at [Stop overreacting] until the words blurred. Then I remembered the day we decided on the limo rental.

The limo had been classic white, exactly right for a wedding.

Then out of nowhere, Grant wanted it changed to pink.

I asked why.

Bianca peeked out from behind him, all sweetness.

“Oh, it’s nothing weird, Serena. Pink just photographs better. I wanted to do a little shoot in the limo before the wedding. I’m not trying to steal your thunder or anything. You’re the bride.”

I said no.

Grant gave me two choices.

“It’s just a color. Bianca’s always loved pink. Just let her have it.”

“Or I send someone else to pick you up, and I’ll take the limo to Bianca’s myself.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

It was my wedding.

And he was offering to send a stranger in his place to bring me to my own wedding.

I gave in. Like always.

I agreed to the color change, but I made him promise: he had to come for me first.

He promised.

But he never showed. The promise meant nothing.

I texted him back.

[The wedding is permanently off.]
