She was silent for a moment, then nodded.

“Three days from now. The public mate announcement will be broadcast live across the city.” She paused, then continued, “Alpha said that once you’re a little stronger, he’ll bring in the best specialists for rehab and reconstructive treatment, so you’ll want for nothing for the rest of your life.”

I let out a faint laugh. “So he wants to compensate me and keep my mouth shut?”

Nora lowered her head and didn’t dare answer.

Not long after, Daphne arrived.

She was wearing a couture dress and stiletto heels, looking like she had just stepped out of a photo shoot.

She bent over me with a gentle smile, then pressed her hand hard against a wound that still hadn’t healed.

Pain ripped through my entire body in an instant. Cold sweat poured down my forehead, but I didn’t make a sound.

Slowly, she wiped the blood from her fingertips and leaned close to my ear. “Violet, you really still think you can come back from this?”

“Those photos and little booklets of you are selling like crazy. Your brother personally collected the money.”

“And all those stories that started trending online? He was the one who had them boosted.”

“No one in this world wants you anymore.”

I stared at her, my voice cold. “Are you trying to drive me to kill myself?”

Daphne smiled. “Why would I ever let you die? I want you wide awake while you watch me take the place you wanted most, step by step.”

The moment the words left her mouth, footsteps sounded outside the door.

Her face changed. She immediately slapped herself twice, and her eyes turned red on the spot.

When Landon pushed the door open, the first thing he saw was her kneeling at my bedside, eyes shimmering with tears.

“Daphne, what happened?”

Choking on a sob, she said, “I just wanted to come see Violet, but she got too emotional. She said a lot of awful things to me, and then… then she even tried to hit me with something.”

I laughed out loud. “I’m practically crippled. What exactly was I supposed to hit you with? My eyes?”

But Landon didn’t even look at me. He said in a low voice, “Violet, she’s Griffin’s publicly acknowledged future mate now. You can’t keep making scenes the way you used to.”

“Daphne is gentle and kind. She’s willing to indulge you, so don’t be ungrateful.”

I looked at him and suddenly found the whole thing unbearably ridiculous.

“Landon, you are the stupidest man alive.”

I kicked over the medicine bottle beside the bed, and glass shattered across the floor.

Landon instinctively pulled Daphne behind him. A shard sliced open his temple.

Daphne gasped and rushed to cover the wound for him, while I bit down on the tip of my tongue and the taste of blood spread through my mouth at once.

“If you don’t leave right now, I’ll die in front of you.”

His face changed sharply, and at last he snapped. “You lunatic. You’re completely insane.”

“If you want to die, then die. Who would care?!”

The door slammed shut with a bang.

I unclenched my teeth, shaking all over.

After they left, I lay alone in the hospital room, staring at the ceiling for a very long time.

And in that moment, I suddenly understood that there was nothing left in this place worth missing.

A month later, Griffin held a public mate announcement for Daphne on a scale no one had ever seen before.

The media, the major Alpha families, social elites, and members of the board were all there.

And I, the woman everyone had once assumed would stand beside Griffin, was dressed up like a ridiculous prop. Wrapped in a shawl, my hair hanging in disarray, I was pushed into the farthest corner of the venue in a wheelchair.

I heard Landon say quietly to Nora, “If she doesn’t show up, people outside will say Griffin is heartless.”

“The way she looks now only makes Daphne seem more gracious and composed.”

So they wouldn’t even spare the last shred of my dignity.

They left me in that corner while the whispers rose all around me.

“That’s her, isn’t it? The one from Building Six…”

“I heard she’s mentally unstable now. She has breakdowns every day.”

“If she had known her place and stepped aside sooner, she wouldn’t have ended up like this.”

Then Griffin took the stage with Daphne, and the lights came up.

He saw me.

As he passed by, his gaze caught on me for a brief second.

I wanted to call out to him. My lips moved, but no sound came out.

Something flickered in his eyes, but in the end, he never came any closer.
