Poppy flinched under his roar. She forced a weak smile. “I wasn’t trying to hide it-I was just scared.

Mid-sentence, I spoke my curse low and clear. “From now on, every lie Poppy tells will break one of

her bones.”

Caius cut me a look. Cold. Dismissive.

Poppy paid no mind. She stepped forward, tugged at Caius’s sleeve, and kept talking, “Caius, I was scared. I didn’t want to hurt you. I was going to tell you-I just… I needed time.”

The words had barely left her mouth when she tripped on absolutely nothing. Her shin slammed against a step with a sickening crack.

Agony ripped through her. Her face contorted. “Aah! My leg!”

She was seeing stars.

Caius couldn’t stand it. He moved to help her up. “Are you okay?”

Sweat soaked Poppy’s face. She glanced at my expressionless face, rolled her eyes, and forced out more words. “I’m fine. If this helps Ravenna feel better, she can trip me a thousand times. I won’t

say a word.”

Just like that, Caius melted. Of course.

He glared at me. “The dead aren’t coming back. Why are you still making Poppy suffer?”

He scooped Poppy up to carry her out. But Poppy, who couldn’t have weighed more than a hundred pounds, suddenly became impossibly heavy.

“Ah!” She was airborne for barely a second before Caius lost his grip and dropped her.

Her tailbone hit the steps with a sound that made the whole room wince.

“My bone.” Her voice was bitter with agony.

Still, she didn’t stop. “Caius, I’m sorry-I really didn’t mean to lie. Eira’s death hurts me just as

much as it hurts you.”

“If I’d known saving my cat would cost Eira her life, I would’ve kept my mouth shut that day.”

Caius saw the earnest look on her face and sighed. He took her hand. “Let me get you to a hospital.”

The instant their skin touched, Poppy’s finger bones shattered.

Caius was sure he hadn’t used any force. Why was Poppy breaking bones over and over? Then my

curse echoed in his head. Every lie Poppy tells will break one of her bones.

He had Vital Edict. Of course he believed others might carry similar gifts.

As he watched bone after bone snap, the truth started to click. “Poppy, did you really not know that if I saved the cat first, Eira would die?”

Poppy froze. “Of course. Before I called you, I specifically asked Eira’s attending physician. They told me she still had a few months. That’s why I called.”

The words were barely out when she reached for Caius’s shirt-and her forearm snapped clean in

half for no reason at all.

“Aaah!” Poppy screamed.

Caius’s gaze turned to ice.

He let the silence hang for a beat. “Did you hide Eira’s death to spare my feelings? Or to drive a wedge between me and Ravenna?”

Poppy answered, voice trembling. “To spare your feelings, of course. Caius, you’re completely misreading this.”

She tried to push herself up, but just the slight movement caused her other lower leg to snap at a grotesque angle.

Lies. Another lie.

Looking at Poppy, with barely an unbroken bone left in her body, Caius felt a tidal wave crash through him.

“You’re lying! You’ve been lying this whole damn time!”.

Just like that, his sympathy died. Every last bit. What replaced it was fury-cold and absolute. She’d

made a fool of him.

Poppy had no clue what was happening and tried to explain, but the agony was too much. She

blacked out.

Caius Varron’s reputation was destroyed.

Investors pulled out. Every last one.

The company he’d fought to save crumbled overnight.

But this time, Caius didn’t care about any of it.

He followed me as I carefully gathered what remained of Eira’s ashes. His eyes were raw and

swollen. He came with me to the cemetery.

“Ravenna, I was wrong. About everything. Give me a chance to make it up to her. Please.”

Caius wanted to handle Eira’s funeral arrangements.

I looked at him like he was a stranger.

“Caius, where were you when I needed you? Don’t you think it’s a little late to try now?”
