Why Can’t I Escape This Man Chapter 06

The SYSTEM left as quickly as it had arrived.

Once it was gone, my life went back to normal.

Mash and I returned to our rental apartment, just the two of us. Cats ate cat food, and humans ate human food. When Mash didn’t eat enough, I’d give him two kicks. When I didn’t eat enough, he’d come over and

smack me twice with his paw.

After a while, I started to wonder if my time with Evan had all been a dream. Until I saw him on a financial

news segment.

Months had passed. He looked thinner. But his presence was even stronger than before. His sharp jawline and slightly more prominent cheekbones made his already handsome face look even colder.

The moment he stepped out, reporters swarmed.

“Mr. Chase, how’s the deal with Apex going?”

“Mr. Chase, we haven’t seen you with Sophie Newman in a while. Are wedding plans moving forward?”

“Word is the date’s set and she’s planning it herself-true?”

“Congratulations on the upcoming wedding-”

Voices overlapped, buzzing. Evan stood in the middle, eyelids half-lowered, expression flat and weary. His security pushed through the crowd. He slid into the car without a single word.

He might as well have confirmed all of it.

The screen went dark. I stared at my bowl of food until Mash’s head bumped insistently against my ankle.

His meow came out raw. He circled me, anxious.

I set down my bowl, scratched behind his ears. “Mash, this food is awful. We’re not eating this tomorrow. Oh,

and I got a job-start tomorrow. Be good while I’m gone.”
