The noisy ballroom fell completely silent.

Vanessa was the first to cry out, the arrogance in her voice gone, replaced by a tremor.

“What? How could you possibly be Olivia’s mother?”

My mother looked genuinely confused.

“Why couldn’t I be her mother? Today is her mother-in-law’s fiftieth birthday. I spent hours on a bus from my town just to come to the party and bring Margaret some of her favorite apples. Margaret and Ethan both know me. Why would you think I’m not her mother?”

My mother had spent years living a simple life in her small town.

Apart from coming to the city for my wedding, she rarely attended events like this.

Whenever she came to bring Ethan apples she’d grown herself, she always took the bus home the

same day.

She didn’t stay in hotels or shop at luxury stores, and she certainly never attended Walker Group

social events.

That was why almost none of the guests here tonight recognized her.

After hearing her explanation, everyone froze. That was when Ethan finally seemed to come back to

his senses.

He had been staring at my mother the entire time, and even his voice sounded different.

“Mom, you… you’re not dead?”

My mother looked at him in confusion.

“Ethan, what are you talking about? I’m perfectly fine. Why would I be dead?”

“I just spent several hours on a bus, so I’m a little tired. There’s nothing wrong with me.”

Emily immediately asked, “Did you go to the Lakeshore Restaurant this afternoon?”

My mother shook her head.

“No. I was on the bus all afternoon. As soon as I arrived in the city, I took a cab straight to the hotel.”

As she spoke, she pulled a crumpled bus ticket from her old canvas bag.

The departure and arrival times were printed clearly on it.

Everyone around us fell silent. A few seconds passed before someone finally spoke in a low voice.

“Then who was the woman at the restaurant this afternoon? Didn’t Vanessa say she was Olivia’s

mother?”

“But Olivia’s mother was still on the bus. Did Vanessa get the wrong person?”

“Then the woman who died…”

Ethan stared at the bus ticket for a long time.

Then he slowly turned to Vanessa.

“You said the woman who ate at the Lakeshore Restaurant without paying this afternoon was

Olivia’s mother. If the dead woman wasn’t her… then who the hell was she?”
