After returning to the small apartment I had bought for myself, I took some time off to prepare for my mating ceremony.

That man had crossed such a long distance to bring me home.

My heart jolted, and I immediately opened my phone.

Rachel had posted the video from the drinking game online.

She was a moderately popular influencer who often posted videos of her daily life with “the guys.”

The video had been maliciously edited, leaving only the part where I drank the liquor in public and “admitted” I was the other woman.

The internet exploded with insults.

Someone dug up my name.

Then they followed the trail and found my workplace in the human world.

Countless private messages flooded into my social media accounts.

“A college professor knowingly being the other woman? Have you no shame?”

“Homewreckers should die.”

“No wonder she became an associate professor so young. Guess she spread her legs for it. Disgusting.”

I was shaking with anger as I hit the gas and drove straight to Cole’s apartment.

When I confronted her, Rachel only offered a smug, innocent shrug.

“I just thought that part was funny, so I posted it. Maya, don’t take it so seriously.”

I saw the provocation in her eyes and slapped her hard across the face.

Cole shoved me away, his face turning livid.

“Maya! Are you insane?”

“It’s just a video. Do you really have to blow things out of proportion?”

I opened my phone and shoved the screen into his face.

“Look carefully at what she posted. Because of her, I lost my job…”

Although I was leaving anyway, and I had already planned to resign.

Cole cut me off impatiently.

“Rachel has always been clueless and blunt. She isn’t like you, calculating every little thing and holding grudges. How was she supposed to know one random video would blow up online?”

“Besides, was anything she posted not true?”

I stared at him in disbelief, a violent bitterness rising in my throat.

“What do you mean?”

In that instant, I lost all strength to argue.

I gulped in air, but I still felt like I was suffocating.

With one sentence, he turned the past eight years into a joke.

Only then did my heart finally go completely cold.

My phone rang.

It was the bridal boutique.

“Miss Maya, you have a three o’clock appointment today to try on your wedding dress. Will you still be coming?”

I nodded.

“I’ll be there soon.”

After I hung up, Cole suddenly let out a condescending chuckle.

“So this whole scene was just because you wanted me to go with you to try on your dress?”

He took it for granted that I was only trying to get his attention.

“Too bad I have to take Rachel to her follow-up appointment today. Go by yourself.”

As if afraid I would keep pestering him, he looked at me with a cold glare.

“If you keep making trouble, don’t expect me to show up at the mating ceremony next week.”

He was certain I had been looking forward to that ceremony.

Certain I had been begging for his mark.

But that was before.

I gave him a mocking smile.

“Suit yourself.”

Then I turned and left.

My mating ceremony had nothing to do with him.

He had thought he would be calm.

But his palms were sweating profusely.

Memories flashed through his mind, and the final thought that settled there was this, Maya would look beautiful in a wedding dress.

He waited for a long time, but there was still no movement at the entrance.

A violent unease gradually rose in his chest.

The next second, the doors opened.

His bride had arrived.

Cole immediately let out a breath of relief.

But the people who flooded the aisle were just his groomsmen.

Then his best friend’s shocked voice rang in his ears.

“Cole, you’re not going to believe this. The bride at the ceremony next door is named Maya too. Even the photo looks exactly like her!”
