Sold by My Mate, Claimed by Another Alpha Chapter 08

The madam backed toward the door with an awkward smile and even made sure to pull it shut behind her.

Clara let out a cold laugh and brought her heel down on my broken leg.

The bone that had only just started to heal snapped again, twisting the wrong way.

Pain blacked out my vision, and cold sweat soaked through my clothes in an instant.

Clara’s voice came from above me, thick with hatred.

“Emilia, you owe me all of this!”

“I went to so much trouble to get you thrown into prison because I wanted you to die in there. But you just had to stay alive and keep getting in my way.”

“Still, I have to thank Alpha Christian for being ruthless enough to hand me the perfect knife. So, how was Xavier last night?”

I forced my head up through the numb haze of pain, my throat too raw to make a sound.

“Xavier… you arranged that?”

“Of course I did. He was such a useful weapon. The second he heard you were the one he’d get to ruin, he agreed on the spot. He was thrilled.”

She patted my cheek as if she were toying with an animal.

“Oh, and there’s something else you still don’t know. Those ashes you’ve been holding, warming, kneeling before every day? They were never your mother’s.”

“What did you say?”

The heart that had been numb for so long finally surged with violent turmoil, but Clara only clapped her hands and laughed.

“Yes. That look right there. So much better than the half-dead look you had a second ago.”

“The ashes you’ve been kneeling to every day belong to the woman you hate most. My mother.”

“You didn’t seriously think your mother died all those years ago and they’d still keep the Luna’s place open for her, did you?”

I grabbed a fistful of her hair in disbelief.

“Shut up! You’re lying!”

“How could those not be my mother’s ashes? I prayed for her three times a day. How could I have been praying to your mother?”

The thing that had kept me going all this time collapsed inside me with one brutal blow.

Clara winced from the pain, but she still curled her mouth into a taunting smile.

“There was a little bit of gold in your mother’s ashes. I saw it myself.”

It hit me like lightning.

My mother had gotten one of her teeth capped in gold.

Clara leaned in, laughing. “Want to guess where your mother’s ashes really are?”

“Remember those fireworks I set off on your birthday?”

“Your mother’s ashes were in them, blasted into the sky.”

I couldn’t hold back the hatred anymore. I spat blood in her face.

Then, with everything I had left, I slapped her twice, the sharp sound cracking through the room.

Clara’s face twisted with rage.

She drove her foot into my chest, then ground her heel down over my broken leg again and again.

I bit down hard and refused to make a sound.

When I still didn’t scream, she grabbed my jaw and forced a faintly sweet liquid down my throat.

It carried a sharp, gasoline-like tang.

“Wolfbane, right?”

Clara froze for a split second, her face warping.

“How do you know that?”

Then, after a beat, she sneered.

“So what if you do? You’re going to die anyway.”

Her smug voice was cut off by shouting outside.

The madam called through the door, “Luna, those two Alphas are headed this way!”

Clara panicked and bolted, abandoning me on the floor, only to slam straight into Cassian at the doorway.

Cassian’s pupils tightened the second he saw the blood splattered across the hem of her dress.

“Grab her. Take her back to Ashenfang Pack and lock her up.”

Clara was dragged away screaming and crying. Cassian and Rafael rushed to my door, only to find it locked from the inside.

Thinking of that patch of blood, Cassian pounded on the door in rising panic.

“Emilia, where are you hurt? How bad is it?”

“Open the door. Your brother and I will take you back and get you treated.”

I sat slumped against the door, blood spread all over the floor.

But I didn’t care.

The men outside were so unbearably loud that I finally forced out a weak reply.

“Go back. I don’t need treatment. Isn’t my life what you’ve wanted for a long time? Then you can have it today.”
